Whatever momentum the Kings gained from their come-from-behind victory Monday over the Ducks seemed to end when they took the ice to face the Red Wings on Wednesday night at Staples Center. Dustin Penner took a tripping penalty only 2:21 into the game. Rob Scuderi then went for tripping at 6:56.

The Red Wings generated three shots on each power play, but couldn’t score. Detroit took control of the game soon enough, however. The puck seemed to be in the Kings’ end of the ice for the next few minutes and the Red Wings finally broke through when Kyle Quincey scored on a blooper-reel goal to make it 1-0 at 9:42.

Kings goalie Jonathan Bernier reached out to glove Quincey’s shot, but didn’t handle the puck cleanly. It popped into the air and Bernier lost track of it. Gravity took over and the puck bounced off the goalie’s back into the net as Kings fans in the crowd groaned and Red Wings fans cheered.

At one point, the Red Wings had an 11-1 advantage in shots on net.

The period ended with the Red Wings outshooting the Kings 13-5.
