Dustin Penner back in the Kings’ lineup and Matt Greene out of it?

Kings coach Darryl Sutter said left wing Dustin Penner would return to the lineup for Saturday’s game against the San Jose Sharks and that defenseman Matt Greene might be sidelined for the regular-season finale at Staples Center.

Penner was scratched for the Kings’ loss Wednesday to the Red Wings in Detroit, but was skating with right wing Justin Williams and center Jarret Stoll during Friday’s practice at the team’s El Segundo training facility.

“No player is ever happy about being scratched and I’m excited to be playing again,” Penner said in a robotic voice after Friday’s practice. “I know why (he didn’t play against the Red Wings). I’ve just got to play better.”

Sutter said Greene’s injury was not related to the back surgery that sidelined the veteran for 42 games earlier this season. The coach said it didn’t happen during the Kings’ loss to the Red Wings, but declined to elaborate or characterize the injury in any way, shape or form.
