Kings captain Dustin Brown was named Monday as one of three finalists for the 2012-13 Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award, presented to “the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice during the regular season.” Daniel Alfredsson of the Ottawa Senators and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks are the other finalists, the league announced.
Brown, in his fifth season as the Kings’ captain, makes a $50 donation for each hit he lays on opponents with the money going to the Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and KABOOM! He has raised $60,000 since the 2008-09 season and helped to build a playground in Carson in 2010.
“It’s an honor,” Brown said. “It’s not something you go out and look for, I guess. To be among Toews and Alfredsson in special.”
