Robyn Regehr compares Drew Doughty to another fine skating defenseman

Kings defenseman Robyn Regehr didn’t hesitate when asked Thursday to compare current partner Drew Doughty with anyone he’s played with in the past. Regehr praised Doughty’s all-around game by comparing him to Scott Niedermayer, the now retired former Duck and New Jersey Devil.

Regehr and Niedermayer formed a similar tandem for Canada during the 2004 World Cup, with Regehr staying at home on the blue line and punishing opposing forwards along the boards and around the net and Niedermayer seeking out playmaking opportunities.

“He was just a very gifted skater, a guy who could play 28, 29, 30 minutes a game every single night and play every single situation and also be very involved offensively,” Regehr said of Niedermayer. “So, that’s probably the closest comparison I could come up with.

“I don’t think there’s been anyone in Calgary I played with, or in Buffalo.”
