You get the feeling the Kings will be content to let left wing Dustin Penner walk as an unrestricted free agent. To be sure, they wouldn’t have that Stanley Cup championship banner hanging in the Staples Center rafters without him. But he’s also been something of a disappointment during the last two regular seasons.

Here’s what Kings general manager Dean Lombardi told the team’s website reporter Wednesday: “It’s one of those cap things and I guess it’s safe to say I have a limited amount of cap space left, and there certainly isn’t going to be enough to – I mean (meet) his requirements. I talked to him the other day and I just told him. I talked to his agent a couple days ago and (said), ‘This is where we’re at. I’ve only got X amount left.'”

Meanwhile, Ducks general manager Bob Murray agreed Friday that Penner had his most productive seasons in Anaheim and Murray didn’t rule out signing him and teaming him with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry after trading Bobby Ryan to the Ottawa Senators. Penner, Getzlaf and Perry helped the Ducks win a Stanley Cup in 2006-07.
