Matt Frattin scores the lone goal in the Kings’ training camp scrimmage

The Kings divided their 57-man training camp roster into two teams for a scrimmage Saturday in El Segundo. Actually, it was 56 since team captain Dustin Brown sat out because of a sore hamstring. Matt Frattin scored the only goal in the 40-minute scrimmage, leading the Black team to a 1-0 victory over the White squad. Frattin skated with Jeff Carter and Mike Richards to start the scrimmage.

Frattin was acquired in the Kings’ deal that sent goaltender Jonathan Bernier to Toronto.

Mathieu Garon started in goal for the Black team and Jonathan Quick was in net for the White. Each of the Kings’ seven goaltenders got a chance to play a little during the scrimmage, which included a 30-minute game with a running clock and a referee and two linesmen. The teams then played 10 minutes of 4-on-4 after a short break.

In addition to the Frattin-Carter-Richards line, there were several other interesting combinations. Tyler Toffoli started out with Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams. Daniel Carcillo skated with Colin Fraser and Jordan Nolan, a trio we’ve seen at times during drills in the opening days of training camp.

Veteran defenseman Willie Mitchell, who last played in a game in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final in 2012, was on the ice for the White team during the scrimmage. A knee injury sidelined him for all of last season. He reported no pain in his knee after the scrimmage. He won’t play in Sunday’s exhibition against the Phoenix Coyotes.
