Kings center Anze Kopitar shoulders some of the blame for loss to Flames

The call might have seemed questionable to the referees in the Staples Center stands, but Kings center Anze Kopitar didn’t second-guess a hooking call that went against him and yielded the game-winning power-play goal for the Calgary Flames on Monday night.

“We definitely lost the special teams battles,” Kopitar said, referring to the Flames’ three-power play goals during their 3-2 victory. “Usually, when that happens, the outcome is not going to be very good. … We took some bad penalties, including myself. It was a stupid penalty on my part and shouldn’t have happened.”

Coach Darryl Sutter faults defenseman Matt Greene on late penalty kill

Kings coach Darryl Sutter pulled no punches when assessing blame for the team’s faulty penalty-kill in the closing seconds of their 3-2 loss to the Calgary Flames on Monday night. Said Sutter: “Greener should have cleared it (the puck). He should have had it down the ice. He’s one of our top penalty killers. We had the (right) four guys on the ice, and we didn’t get the puck down the ice. It was a good shot (by Calgary’s T.J. Brodie).”

Greener, of course, is veteran defenseman Matt Greene.

“We need to be stronger on pucks, be better positionally and just (be better) on everything,” Greene said of the Kings’ penalty-kill. “If you give up three (power-play) goals in a game it is unacceptable and we have got to be better.”

Kings make their talking points after defeating Stars in their homecomeing

Right wing Justin Williams talked about it after the Kings’ 5-2 victory Saturday over the Dallas Stars at Staples Center. Defenseman Jake Muzzin addressed it, too. So did defenseman Drew Doughty after he scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Kings’ fifth victory in their last six games. None of the three needed prompting.

Special teams report

The Kings ended a four-game drought without a power-play goal when right wing Justin Williams chipped a backhander into the back of the net in the first period of Saturday’s victory over the Dallas Stars. Their last power-play goal was in an Oct. 9 win over the Ottawa Senators. Of equal or greater importance to Kings coach Darryl Sutter was the penalty-killing unit’s ongoing excellence. He was pleased by their success, of course, but only to a point. Sutter always believes the Kings can do better. At everything. All the time.

The Kings have killed off 14 consecutive shorthanded situations over their last four games, with goaltender Jonathan Quick serving as their best penalty killer during Saturday’s victory over the Stars. Quick made several excellent saves while the Kings were shorthanded. The Kings might have relied on him a little too much for Sutter’s taste.

“There were times tonight we killed the penalty and there were other teams we didn’t and Quick had to make big saves he should haven’t to,” Sutter said.

Final: Kings 5, Stars 2

Tomorrow’s game story tonight …

One of these nights, one of the Kings’ centers will actually put the puck into the back of the net. Until they do, until one of them actually scores a goal, the Kings will have to settle for some effective playmaking from Anze Kopitar, Mike Richards and company.

Kings coach Darryl Sutter shuffles his lineup for game against the Stars

Kings coac Darryl Sutter made a couple of minor tweaks to the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Dallas Stars at Staples Center, scratching ineffective forward Matt Frattin and defenseman Alec Martinez. Colin Fraser replaced Frattin and Jake Muzzin took Martinez’s spot in the defense crops.

What’s going on with the Kings’ power play?

Kings coach Darryl Sutter is concerned. Of course he’s concerned. He’s just not about to let the Kings’ malfunctioning power play keep him up late at night. The Kings went 0 for 13 with the man-advantage during their four-game trip. Sutter said the numbers weren’t troubling, but the timing was poor. A power-play goal, or two, or three could have changed the momentum in several games, especially during their 5-1 loss to Tampa Bay.

Why is it the Kings never seem nervous or jittery in tight games (part 1)?

It’s not the most attractive hockey, and maybe it’s ugly at times, but the Kings excel at the grind-it-out style of play that helped them win the Stanley Cup championship in 2011-12. They’ve been locked in so many tight games over the last few seasons that it’s almost become second nature. They never seem nervous or tight with the game on the line.
