Looking ahead to the Kings’ game Monday against the Vancouver Canucks

The Kings (15-6-3) have lost two in a row in overtime, but have gained at least one point in nine consecutive games (6-0-3). Goaltender Ben Scrivens is 4-0-2 in six starts since replacing the Kings’ No. 1 goalie Jonathan Quick, who suffered a groin strain Nov. 12 that might keep him out until Christmas at the earliest. Scrivens also has a 1.15 goals-against average, a .955 save percentage and two shutouts in his last six games. All is not rosy in the Kings’ world, however. They have scored only one goal in the last 125:02, having been beaten 1-0 in OT on Saturday by the Colorado Avalanche and 2-1 in extra time Thursday by the New Jersey Devils. Injured forwards Jeff Carter (foot), Matt Frattin (lower body) and Trevor Lewis (lower body) will not play in tonight’s game against the Canucks (12-9-4) in Vancouver or in Wednesday’s contest against the Sharks in San Jose. Anze Kopitar leads the Kings with 22 points (six goals, 16 assists). Henrik Sedin leads the Canucks with 24 points (six goals, 18 assists).

Kings GM Dean Lombardi says Jonathan Quick could be out until Christmas

When goaltender Jonathan Quick suffered a groin strain during the Kings’ shootout loss Nov. 12 to the Buffalo Sabres, the original estimate was that he would be sidelined for between four and six weeks. Kings general manager Dean Lombardi more or less confirmed that diagnosis when he told a Canadian radio program Wednesday that Quick would be out for at least another month and might not be back before Christmas at the soonest.

“It’s going to be a while,” Lombardi said. “At least another month. We’re probably looking, if things go according to plan, at Christmas.”

Ben Scrivens talks about staying sharp while waiting for his chance to shine

Kings goalie Ben Scrivens made it clear Monday there was no secret formula to going 3-0-1 in four games on the team’s trip to play the Sabres, Islanders, Devils and Rangers. There was no magic wand to be waved. It was nothing but hard work that enabled him to play so well after starting goalie Jonathan Quick suffered a groin injury during the Kings’ shootout loss Nov. 12 to the Sabres.

Three things about the Kings’ 3-2 victory Thursday (11/14) over the Islanders

The Kings turned in a lackluster first 40 minutes Thursday, falling behind the New York Islanders by two goals at Uniondale, N.Y., before rallying behind third-period goals from defenseman Slava Voynov and rookie forwards Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli to pull out a 3-2 victory. The Kings have secured three points out of a possible four so far on their four-game trip. Here are three things about the Kings’ victory over the Islanders:

1. Coach Darryl Sutter was forced to ice a lineup that didn’t include forwards Jeff Carter (broken foot), Kyle Clifford (concussion) and Jarret Stoll (upper body), plus defenseman Matt Greene (upper body) and goaltender Jonathan Quick (groin). With the Kings playing as if they were stuck in traffic on the Long Island Expressway, Sutter turned to Pearson, Toffoli and Linden Vey for some energy in the third period. The coach teamed the three rookies together, hoping their experience as a top line with Manchester (N.H.) of the American Hockey League would aid them. Pearson scored the tying goal and Toffoli supplied the go-ahead score, with only 1 minute, 27 seconds left in the third. So, that worked well. You can expect to see them together again. Often. The Kings’ trip continues with games Friday against the New Jersey Devils and Sunday against the New York Rangers.

2. Ben Scrivens has a chance to show the Kings and their fans that the club didn’t get swindled in the offseason trade that sent backup goalie Jonathan Bernier to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Scrivens and forward Matt Frattin went the other way. Quick is out for up to six weeks because of a groin injury suffered Tuesday in the Kings’ shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres, so Scrivens should have plenty of time to prove his value. Scrivens had 23 saves in the Kings’ come-from-behind victory over the Islanders, keeping them within striking distance while they were outplayed during the first two periods. Martin Jones will serve as his backup for the time being.

3. Slava Voynov continues to impress and amaze. He kick-started the Kings’ comeback with a goal from a sharp angle off a pass from below the goal line by Anze Kopitar. There’s more to the young defenseman’s game than scoring, though. The puck seemed to be following him around the ice in the third period, when the Kings wrestled control of the game from the Islanders. Voynov isn’t the biggest player in the Kings’ defense corps. He’s not their best puckhandler. He’s certainly not their most experienced player. He continues to make smart plays that help the Kings win games, however. It happens at both ends of the ice, too. He’s not a one-trick pony, which is why his value to the Kings will only increase as he logs more and more ice time. He’s trending in the right direction, in other words.

Sutter: Jonathan Quick has a strained groin and could be out up to six weeks

Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick suffered a strained groin during a 3-2 shootout loss Tuesday to the Buffalo Sabres, according to reports from the team’s morning skate Thursday in Uniondale, N.Y. The Los Angeles Times reported an MRI exam revealed the injury was confined to Quick’s groin and that his hamstring was not hurt. Surgery is not required, but Quick could be sidelined for up to six weeks.

Three things about the Kings’ shootout loss Tuesday (11/12) to the Sabres

The Kings rallied to tie the Buffalo Sabres, forcing Tuesday’s game to overtime and then a shootout before falling 3-2. Dwight King continued his fine season by scoring the tying goal. The Kings had two chances with the power play in overtime, but couldn’t score. Goaltender Jonathan Quick was forced from the game with an undisclosed injury late in OT and Ben Scrivens was pressed into a no-win situation. Here are three things about the Kings’ loss to the NHL’s last-place team.

Three things about the Kings’ rout of the Panthers

The Kings choked the life out of the Florida Panthers on Sunday afternoon in Sunrise, Fla., handling them with a dominating performance that featured Ben Scrivens’ first start in goal, Daniel Carcillo’s first goal with the club and Justin Williams’ 500th career point. The Kings’ 3-0 victory gave them a 2-0 record to start their four-game trip. Here are three things worth noting about their 3-0 victory over the Panthers:

What to watch on the Kings’ trip (part 2)

The Kings hit the road Thursday for a four-game trip that starts Friday in Raleigh, N.C., lugging some serious baggage after four games to start the season. Here’s the second of three things to watch during an eight-night trek to play the Carolina Hurricanes, the Florida Panthers, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Nashville Predators:

When will we see Ben Scrivens get his first start with the Kings? The backup goaltender played 14 minutes, 20 seconds in one relief appearance so far, with Jonathan Quick starting each of the first four regular-season games. The schedule gets a little tight over the next few days, with games coming roughly every other day for the next week or so. Kings coach Darryl Sutter would play Quick in every game if he could, but he’s no dummy. Sutter knows it’s best to pace Quick over the long 82-game regular season. So, keep an eye out for Scrivens, who has something to prove after the Kings acquired him in the deal that sent backup goalie Jonathan Bernier to the Toronto Maple Leafs last summer.

Backup goaltending situation resolved with release of Mathieu Garon

Ever since the Kings traded backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier to the Toronto Maple Leafs last summer there was some question as to Bernier’s replacement. The Kings acquired goalie Ben Scrivens from the Maple Leafs, but there was no guarantee he would get the job. The Kings had six possible candidates to serve as Jonathan Quick’s backup when training camp began. With camp at an end Sunday, the Kings cut the number to one when they released Mathieu Garon and handed the role to Scrivens.

Scrivens was the Maple Leafs’ backup last season, going 7-9-0 with a 2.69 goals-against average in 20 appearances. He also was 14-7-1 with a 2.22 goals-against average in 22 games for Toronto of the American Hockey League. Garon, a former Kings starter, spent last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning and was 5-9-2 with a 2.90 GAA.
