Ziggy Palffy, who helped the Kings pull off a memorable playoff upset of the Detroit Red Wings in 2001, announced his retirement from professional hockey Wednesday. He played from 1999 to 2004 with the Kings, one of his three NHL teams. He also played for the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins and spent the last five seasons playing in his native Slovakia. He scored 713 points, including 329 goals, in 684 regular-season games in the NHL. Palffy, 41, played a total of 12 seasons in the NHL before sitting out the 2006-07 season. He returned to his homeland and played for HK 36 Skalica in Slovakia.
