Confirmed: Artest is a Laker

Free agent Ron Artest has agreed to sign with the Lakers. Don’t have many more details, but his agent said he would have a more formal announcement later this afternoon. Artest could fit nicely in the void created by Trevor Ariza’s apparent desire to seek a contract elsewhere. Artest probably will play for the $5.6 million mid-level exception. Now, does an agreement with Artest make it easier for the Lakers to re-sign Lamar Odom? Artest and Odom are childhood friends from New York City.

UPDATED: The deal reportedly is worth $18 million over three seasons. There might be an option for a fourth season (and maybe a fifth, too) that might take it to $35 million or so. Details are still a little hazy. Anyway, Artest leaves Houston and Ariza joins Houston.

That’s an up grade over Ariza!

dude i still wish ariza stays but watever

Ariza’s agent just screwed his chances of him returning to the Lakers. By playing hard-ball and venting to the media, it gave Mitch & Co. the cover to go out and pursue Artest. I like Ariza, but not for anything over MLE. He’s not worth any more than that, especially given no teams are able to pay him more than that.

It’s not going to be a pretty view for him looking up from the bottom of the standings in Toronto, or whatever bottom-dweller he ends up in. Maybe he’ll fire his agent after this too (and Bynum will follow suit!)

The Lakers need to do a sign and trade with any team that will take SF-Adam Morrison, SF-Walton, G-Sun Yue and future 2nd round picks for Artest and Odom. Houston would do this to help fill their void but might insist on including Mbenga. So be it if that’s what it takes. But making the salaries all match where Lakers save a few thousand will make it all worth it. Then the lakers could sign Trevor Ariza with their mid-level exempiton. The Lakers will be able to offer Lamar and Artest better deals next year. The Lakers also need Shannon Brown so somewhere here or there, Dr Buss is going to have to open his wallet. After all is said and done, Lakers will have the most dominating bench in the league. And a team with Bryant, Gasol, Bynum, Odom, Ariza, Fisher, Artest, Brown, Farmar, Vujacic, etc… has CHAMPIONSHIP written all over it!!!

Actually, if Houston’s close to signing Ariza, could the Lakers and Rockets pull a sign and trade allowing them to retain their MLEs to use for other players? Then again, the Lakers don’t need to do the Rockets any favors. Once Odom’s signed, the Lakers will be way over the luxury cap and done spending.

Finally, Kobe and Artest can go get that ice cream.

This means another parade on FIG in June 2010 …I to like Ariza but he had great playoff what was season average …that’s what gets you paid ….

And it looks like Ariza will be accepting the same money from Houston.

David Lee got his client burnt on this deal.

The Lakers need to package SF-ADAM MORRISON,SF-LUKE WALTON & G-SUN YUE together in a trade or buy out. Then acquire G/F ANTHONY PARKER, SF-Bruce Bowen, or G/F-Grant Hill. Then sign F-Lamar Odom and G-Shannon Brown. That would make the Lakers the most potent team in the NBA.

Marco Bell needs to wake up Shannon brown is ok but nothing more then a 5min roll player at that. The only thing the Lakers are missing is a PG and they have one J Farmar he just needs some mins. Fisher needs to come off the bench this year.
