Odom watch: Tuesday night

Hear that? No, don’t turn the volume on your computer up. It’s just in the air.

Crickets.

Loud, persistent crickets.

As the world turns … As Lamar Odom watch continues into its 29th day.

I called up Lakers spokesman John Black this afternoon just to get an on-the-record quote of the day. In the offseason, few sources are willing to speak on the record except for guys like Black, who are paid to do just that.

We both had a hearty laugh when I asked if he had any updates today.

“There’s absolutely nothing new I can tell you on that,” Black said.

Well, can you tell me if the Lakers and Odom’s camp have continued to talk?

“Yes,” he said. “They’ve been talking on a regular basis. That’s all I can say.”

And there, ladies and gentleman, is your daily Lamar Odom update. Officially speaking.

I should mention that Dwyane Wade posted a photo of Odom in a Heat uniform on his twitter feed with the accompanying comment : “the beginning..look who’s jersey is waitn for them in mia(no 7)”

And that Michael Wallace of the Miami Herald has a pretty good summation of things from a South Florida perspective.

But at this point, most of what you read is just speculation based on conversations with team and league sources that are speculating to varying degrees. Really, the only person who knows what’s going to happen is Odom himself, once all the facts are in front of him and all possibilities have been exhausted.

Odom has made no public comments since July 13.

L.O. I really have no ideal why you are making all your Lakers fan who have always support you. wait why you make up your mind. come on Bro, you are a Lakers and if you say anything Please do not say i have to take care of my family. that is such a weak statment when all of us fan only have basketball games to help relieve us of the fact of never haveing enough money to see no more than a couple of game live a year.

I keep seeing people in the media (Marc Stein of espn.com, the Miami Herald guy in the link) claim that the Florida state tax break means Lamar will take home $1 million more in pay annually. That is an utter falsehood and they must know it — an NBA player still have to pay state tax for games played in states with state tax, and playing in Florida as opposed to California, dollar for dollar, will save you around 5-6% in taxes a year. Not a small amount but for Odom to save A MILLION DOLLARS in take home pay a year, both the Lakers and the Heat would have to be offering him identical $20 million a year contracts. A four year, $36 million deal from the Lakers and a five-year $34 million deal from the Heat would be a wash over the full term — if Odom thinks working a year for free for the Heat is not an issue, which seems hardly sensible. That is it with the tax breaks. Since there is no scenario in which the Lakers are not offering significantly more in annual salary, there is no scenario in which Lamar can take home more in annual salary by taking the MLE from the Heat. That is just basic math.

If Odom wants to leave money on the table to join the Heat, that’s his call, although it seems hardly consistent with his insistence that the Lakers pay him every penny he thinks he has coming to him. But this “extra million a year from Florida tax breaks” is pure nonsense and so-called journalists should be ashamed for repeating it. They may as well say Odom should go to Miami because they are widely viewed as a strong contender for the championship than the Lakers next year. That is LESS ridiculous (since it is an opinion) than just making up the math.

This waiting has been crazy. I feel Lamar is stringing the fans along and I am at a point to say see ya!. im a die hard Laker fan and if he really wanted to play for a championship contending team he would have signed. But he is wanting is ego stroked by using the Heat.

Lamar, just sign already you are pissing off thousands of Laker fans that want you to stay.

One thing to consider, maybe he has been waiting to see what national televised games the Heat are to play in vs the Lakers.

I feel he will leave and i hope the Lakers use this as motivation to win it again. When they do, and Lamar season is over by May, I hope Kobe anc Co, stick it to him.
