Winter picked for Hall

Tex Winter, who developed the triangle offense and served as an assistant coach to Phil Jackson with the Lakers and the Chicago Bulls, was among 10 names selected for induction into the Hall of Fame today. Dennis Rodman, who played for Winter and Jackson in Chicago and also had a brief stint with the Lakers, also was selected. As was Chris Mullin, Tara VanDerveer, the women’s coach at Stanford, plus Philadelphia University’s Herb Magee; longtime NBA and ABA star Artis Gilmore; former Portland Trail Blazers center Arvydas Sabonis; Olympic gold medalist Teresa Edwards; Harlem Globetrotter Reece “Goose” Tatum; and former Celtic Tom “Satch” Sanders.

Jackson said Sunday when asked about Winter’s impending selection; “The fact now that he’s had a stroke (in 2009) that’s impaired his abilities, it kind of irritates me a little bit that this wasn’t done 10 years ago when he was still serving basketball in such a great capacity. Still, in all, I’m happy it’s been awarded.”
