Steve Nash sidelined for at least a week with fracture in left leg

The Lakers expect Steve Nash to stay sidelined for at least a week after having an MRI today that showed he has a non-displaced fracture in his left leg.

According to the Lakers’ initial timetable, Nash would miss at least three more games including ones against the Detroit Pistons (Sunday), at Utah (Wednesday) and vs. Golden State (Friday). Nash, who was treated by team doctor Steve Lombardo, will be reevaluated next week.

Nash also sat out of the Lakers’ 105-95 loss Friday to the Clippers. When I asked him how his leg was holding up in a brief moment in the hallway, Nash said, “it’s still the same.”

Nash suffered a lower contusion in his left leg during the Lakers’ 116-106 loss Wednesday to the Portland Trail Blazers at the Rose Garden after colliding with rookie point guard Damian Lillard against his left shin with 2:26 left in the first half. Nash immediately clutched his left knee and hobbled to the locker room. Nash returned in the second half wearing a protective yellow sleeve. But he then went back to the locker room with 10:44 left in the third quarter. Nash then spent the remainder of the game receiving treatment and icing on his left leg.

The Lakers value Nash’s presence for his playmaking and court vision. But through two games, Nash has struggled, averaging only 4.5 points on 33 percent shooting and four assists in 25 minutes per contest. Meanwhile, the Lakers have started 0-3 for the first time since the 1978-79 season.

Lakers reserve Steve Blake started in Nash’s place against the Clippers, posting eight points on 2 of 6 shooting, two assists and six fouls in 38 minutes. Meanwhile, second-year guard Darius Morris assumed all of the backup minutes, scoring seven points on a 3 of 5 clip in 13 minutes.
