Mike D’Antoni’s first day as Lakers coach will be Thursday

In exactly two days, Mike D’Antoni will introduce himself both to his players and to the general public as the Lakers’ head coach, according to Lakers spokesman John Black.

D’Antoni received medical clearance Monday night, Black said, after having knee replacement surgery in November. D’Antoni then will fly to Los Angeles on Wednesday.

D’Antoni told Los Angeles Times columnist T.J. Simers that he plans to make his Lakers coaching debut Sunday against the Houston Rockets. Black said those plans aren’t necessarily binding in case he needs more time to get himself familiar with the team and his surroundings.

Nonetheless, D’Antoni will have his introductory press conference on Thursday.
