Pau Gasol could begin practicing next week

ORLANDO — Assuming he doesn’t experience any setbacks on the torn plantar fascia on his right foot, Lakers forward Pau Gasol could begin practicing with the team as early as next week.

Gasol completed his first basketball workout following morning shootaround Tuesday here at Amway Center, consisting of shooting and post-up drills with Lakers assistant coach Darvin Him. Gasol plans to have another workout Wednesday before the Lakers play in Atlanta. As long as he doesn’t feel any additional pain afterwards, Gasol will then participate Thursday in running drills.

Gasol has missed the past 15 games because of a torn plantar fascia in his right foot. As much as the Lakers miss their versatility and size, coach Mike D’Antoni highlighted difficulties in fitting in with the pick-and-roll schemes involving Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard.

“It’s going to be harder with the spacing a little bit,” D’Antoni said. So we’ll have to figure some things out. But he gives us so much more with him being a great passer and providing different things.”

Gasol has remained injured for the past five weeks, and is expected to stay sidelined for at least one to three more weeks.
