Pau Gasol won’t provide timetable on return

The additional pain Pau Gasol sensed in his right foot after playing a game of two-on-two Saturday will keep him sidelined both tonight against Sacramento and Monday at Phoenix.

Coach Mike D’Antoni hopes the three days before the Lakers play Friday against Washington will give Gasol enough time to heal the torn plantar fascia in his right foot, an injury that has kept him sidelined for 19 games. But Gasol declined to pencil a specific return date.

“I don’t want to put any date,” Gasol said, “so there are no disappointments or surprises.”

Gasol conceded he will have to scale back the intensity of his running exercises, but he sounded hardly concerned about his latest setback.

“It was to be expected,” Gasol said. “As you raise the intensity in the amount of load you put on the foot, it’s going to create a little soreness. It’s a pretty normal reaction with the injury that I had.”

Gasol has yet to participate in any five-on-five contract drills, but D’Antoni said those exercises aren’t a prerequisite for his return. The Lakers will have the day off Tuesday before practicing both Wednesday and Thursday.
