Despite what was initially reported on a feature detailing Brian Shaw’s current gig as the Indiana Pacers’ associate coach, a Charlotte Bobcats official said Shaw was never offered the head-coaching position when he interviewed for the position last summer.

Shaw, who worked as an Lakers assistant coach under Phil Jackson from 2005 to 2011, became the Indiana Pacers’ associate coach in 2011 shortly after the Lakers passed him up in favor of Mike Brown to replace the retired Jackson. This past offseason, Shaw interviewed for vacant coaching positions with the Portland Trail Blazers, Orlando Magic and Charlotte Bobcats. Without speaking about any specific teams, Shaw addressed in general terms what he’s looking for in a head-coaching position.

“I want to be in a situation where I have a chance,” Shaw said. “Usually when you come into your first head coaching job, you don’t get to dictate what the situation is going to be. But you want a chance and an organization that has a game plan going forward that’s sustainable and where you have some pieces of value where you can put things together and get on the fast track.”

A Bobcats official maintained that current coach Mike Dunlap was the only candidate that received a formal offer.
