Source: Lakers assistant Eddie Jordan to talk with Rutgers officials this weekend about coaching position

Lakers assistant coach Eddie Jordan plans to meet with Rutgers officials Saturday to discuss the team’s vacant head-coaching position and likely finalize an agreement, according to a source familiar with the situation but not authorized to discuss publicly.

Jordan hopes to sit on the bench during the Lakers’ game Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs, but there’s a strong possibility he will miss that game since talks could extend through the entire weekend.

Jordan is willing to take the job even if it requires him to miss the Lakers’ possible playoff appearance, according to the source. The Lakers entered Friday’s game against the Golden State Warriors with a one-game lead over the Utah Jazz for the Western Conference’s eighth playoff seed with three games remaining. The Lakers’ regular-season ends Wednesday. The NBA playoffs then begin Saturday.

Rutgers has gone through a coaching search within the past week after firing coach Mike Rice over video evidence that he physically and verbally abused players in practice.

Jordan, who played for Rutger’s 1976 Final Four team, has various coaching experience in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings, Washington Wizards, Philadelphia 76ers and the Lakers. Jordan was the architect of the Lakers offense that featured elements of the Princeton system under Mike Brown.
The Lakers fired Brown after a 1-4 start partly because the front office felt the offense proved too cumbersome for the roster to learn and implement. Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni still kept all of Brown’s assistants on his coaching staff, including Jordan.
