Lakers’ Mike D’Antoni “expects” Jodie Meeks will play Game 2 vs. Spurs

SAN ANTONIO — Despite missing two consecutive practices to heal from a sprained left ankle, there’s a good chance Lakers reserve guard Jodie Meeks will play tonight in Game 2 of the team’s first-round series against the San Antonio Spurs at AT&T Center.

“I expect him to play,” said Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni. “But it will be a game-time decision.”

Meeks took part in all of morning shootaround and he said his ankle at this point feels fine enough to play. But the Lakers want to see how Meeks looks during pre-game warmups before officially deciding his availability.

Meeks believed he felt pain after stepping on an opponent’s foot after driving in for a layup during the Lakers’ 91-79 Game 1 loss Sunday to San Antonio. Either way, Meeks left with 9:11 in the second quarter to get his ankle retaped. He then appeared later in the second half. Meeks played a limited role, scoring only four points on 1 of 4 shooting in 20 minutes.

Afterwards, Meeks said he struggled walking and experienced swelling. Though retaping his ankle, icing and treatment improved his ankle, Meeks sat out both practices Monday and Tuesday for precautionary measures.

The Lakers have plenty of offensive issues against San Antonio. The Spurs’ relentlessly fronted Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol. Lakers guard Steve Nash shot only 6 of 15 from the field in his first game since missing the previous right because of a right hamstring injury. And the Lakers went a combined 3 of 15 from three-point range.

Although it’s only come in flashes, Meeks’ three-point speciality could play a critical part in offsetting the Lakers’ offensive struggles.
