To the dismay of rapper Kendrick Lamar, Instagram Video killed his Vine.
Still, there’s some good news to it. Instagram unveiled its new video feature on Thursday touting Kobe Bryant showing a peek in the video the first time he walked without a boot less than two months after suffering a torn left Achilles tendon.
“@kobebryant June 1st. 7:30am. My first steps without the boot. Rockin the #medicalmambas Walkin like a baby giraffe,” Bryant wrote. He then added the hashtags, #achillesrupture #challenge #pray4bear #recovery”
Bryant had expressed optimism about returning in time for the Lakers’ season opener in late October or early November. But that might not happen. Bryant said in an interview Wednesday on 710 ESPN that he’s targeting either November or December to return to the court. That would still coincide with the Lakers’ initial timetable, however, that he’d stay sidelined for at least six to nine months.
It’s fitting that Instagram’s Video debut would feature a Bryant injury update. The Lakers star initially resisted social media because of his zeal for privacy. But he expanded his presence on Twitter within the past year enough to win the NBA’s “Social MVP” in the inaugural Social Media Awards.
Safe to say that honor means very little to the Larry O’Brien trophies he still wants to collect.
