In a move that could bolster their perimeter defense, the Lakers signed free-agent guard Xavier Henry Thursday to give the team 14 players on its roster.
Terms of the deal weren’t immediately available. But considering the Lakers’ want to keep cap flexibility for the 2014 offseason, it’s likely Henry’s contract consists of a one-year deal at the veteran’s minimum. It’s also unclear if his contract is guaranteed. NBA teams can field a maximum of 15 players on their roster. The Lakers are expected to sign second-round draft pick Ryan Kelly, though he’s still rehabbing from foot surgery in April.
The Memphis Grizzlies originally drafted Henry with the 12th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft before being traded Jan. 2012 to the New Orleans Hornets. He has averaged 4.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 133 games through three NBA seasons.
The Lakers plan to have anywhere between 18-20 players to fill out their training camp roster, including Marcus Landry, who led the Lakers’ Summer League team in scoring.
