In a move that will add more bodies during three days of full-court practices this week, the Lakers recalled rookie forward Ryan Kelly Monday from the D-Fenders, the franchise’s Development League affiliate.

The Lakers left Kelly behind in Los Angeles during their recent week-long trip to maximize his playing time with the D-Fenders. Kelly, whom the Lakers drafted 48th overall this year from Duke, averaged 25 points, eight rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.3 steals in 38.5 minutes through three games with the D-Fenders. That included posting a career-high 30 points in the D-Fenders’ 131-96 victory Monday over the Bakersfield Jam.

The Lakers like Kelly because he fits Mike D’Antoni’s ideal description for the so-called “stretch four position,” which helps space the floor and knocks down outside shots. Kelly had had limited opportunities, though, making two appearances with the Lakers through a total of seven minutes.

The NBA’s recent collective bargaining agreement allows teams to shuffle players back and forth in stints with its respective D-League affiliates. So it’s likely Kelly will jump back to the D-Fenders again. The D-Fenders next play Friday in Bakersfield.
