The mere possibility that Kobe Bryant might speak to the media for the first time in a week prompted about 30-40 reporters to crowd around his locker, positioning their body, cameras and tape recorders so they’d be fully ready to ask and hear answers to various questions.

There was only one problem.

Bryant wasn’t at his locker and he wasn’t planning to come near it. Not with reporters standing there.
