It took nearly two months for Lakers forward Carlos Boozer to reclaim his starting spot. It took only two days for him to do so after sitting out of a game because of a coach’s decision.

Welcome to the Lakers’ 2014-15 season where tonight’s game against the Boston Celtics at Staples Center will have little to do with rekindling a once great rivalry. Instead, this will mark one of the Lakers’ 28 remaining games where coach Byron Scott could field a different starting lineup. Boozer will replace rookie Tarik Black, while Jordan Clarkson, Wayne Ellington, Ryan Kelly and Robert Sacre will still start.

“The second unit, he was our go to guy,” Scott said of Boozer. “He did a great job. With the starting unit, I’m trying to see if he can keep that same type of role and playing the way he was playing. It’ll be interesting to see. He’s a professional and will be okay with it.”

The move seemed surprising namely because Scott lately has put more value on developing young players, such as Black. But Scott has also expressed intrigue about a new reserve unit he tried in Friday’s game against Brooklyn that entailed Ronnie Price, Jeremy Lin, Nick Young, Ed Davis and Jordan Hill closing out the game.

Scott also added that Black will still “get more playing time” and expressed the possibility he could field a 12-man rotation.

Boozer averaged 12.4 points on 49.8 percent shooting and 6.6 rebounds in 26.3 minutes through 19 games as a starter. Scott then benched him for defensive purposes. Although Boozer initially questioned the decision, he averaged 12.6 points on a 52.7 percent clip and 7.2 rebounds in 23.9 minutes as a reserve. Besides declining to criticize Scott for not playing in Friday’s loss to Brooklyn, Boozer often praises his teammates with high fives following a play off the bench and when he speaks to reporters.

“I want to see as many guys as possible and as many combinations as possible,” Scott said. “But the first order of business is I’m trying to win the game.”
