As he takes another turn navigating his uncertain NBA future, Wesley Johnson will experience some similar elements.

For the third consecutive year, Johnson will play his home games at Staples Center and he will enjoy his Manhattan Beach residence. During that span, Johnson will also play for another one-year deal at the veteran’s minimum hopeful that he will fully unleash his potential to command a more lucrative contract.

But Johnson will change his uniform colors from purple and gold to blue and red. He agreed to terms on Tuesday to play for the Clippers in the 2015-16 season, according to a league source familiar with the situation. Johnson will continue an interesting trend in which former Lakers have joined their inner-city rival in recent years, including Ronny Turiaf, Lamar Odom, Caron Butler, Matt Barnes and Jordan Farmar.

It is not clear what interest Johnson attracted in the free agency market, including the Lakers. But the Lakers had mixed feelings about retaining Johnson despite averaging a career-high in 9.9 points, his athleticism and turning 28 on July 11. Through the past two years, the Lakers became increasingly frustrated with Johnson’s inconsistency on both offense and defense.

The Lakers also had less need to keep Johnson after selecting Stanford senior small forward Anthony Brown with the 34th pick of the 2015 NBA draft. Brown is considered a so-called “3 and D” player that can both defend and make outside shots consistently. In his last two seasons with the Cardinal, Brown shot at least 44.1 percent from three-point range.

As for Johnson, he joins a Clippers team trying to overcome the loss of star center DeAndre Jordan. They acquired Paul Pierce and Lance Stephenson both to offset the loss of Matt Barnes and Spencer Hawes and to provide depth.
