Lakers’ Kobe Bryant, D’Angelo Russell still questionable to play vs Golden State

To continue an unlikely four-game winning streak, the Lakers (8-27) may have to do so without a healthy roster entering Tuesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors (31-2) at Staples Center. Both Kobe Bryant and D’Angelo Russell are both considered questionable after experiencing various ailments that kept them off the sidelines in recent days.

Bryant had missed the past two games because of persisting soreness in his surgically repaired right shoulder. The Lakers sent Russell home during Monday’s practice and Tuesday’s morning shootaround after nursing a sore throat.

“If he feels as badly as he looked, then there’s probably no way he’s going to play,” Scott said of Russell after morning shootaround at the Lakers’ practice facility in El Segundo. “He looked pretty bad.”

Russell plans to see doctors around 3:00 p.m. before the Lakers determine his availability. Bryant will continue receiving treatment on his right shoulder leading up to tipoff. But if that’s not enough? Scott will start rookie forward Anthony Brown in Bryant’s place for the third consecutive game. If Russell sits, Scott said he’s “thinking about some different lineups as far as different combinations” considering the Warriors boast a versatile small-ball lineup.

Does that mean Scott will play rookie forward Larry Nance Jr. at small forward as he suggested in recent days?

“Could be,” Scott said, smiling.

Whether actually make a difference sounds like a tough task. The Warriors boast the NBA’s league-leading offense led by defending MVP Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green? The Lakers rank 26th in total defense (105.7). And the Warriors handed the Lakers a 34-point loss in late November even with a healthy lineup.

But Scott mentioned the Lakers’ recent victory over Phoenix on Sunday after losing by 19 points in mid November, though that happened before Eric Bledsoe sustained a season-ending knee injury.

“This is a great challenge. Right now, we want to see where we are and how much we’ve grown,” Scott said. “I think we have a chance tonight against the best team in the league to see that. We’ll see if we’ve grown a little bit on both ends of the floor. Let’s see how they compare to the first time we played them.”
