Which schools are most affected by layoff notices?
Which schools are most affected by notices this week warning teachers that their jobs may be eliminated at the end of the school year?
The LBUSD this week is sending out 1,019 notices to teachers, counselors, social workers, assistant principals and certain other employees. Those employees will find out by May 15 whether they have, in fact, lost their jobs. Those employees - teachers, counselors, social workers, assistant principals - have special credentials, and so are technically called "certificated" employees in education legal jargon.
But which schools are most affected? Click below to bring up the full post to find out!
Rather than use the absolute number of notices, I calculated the percentage of "certificated" employees at each school site who received notices, based on data provided by district officials. Basically I took the number of notices and divided it by the number of full-time-equivalent certificated employees at the school site. (FTE and percentages rounded up, unless percentage was .05 in which case it was rounded down.)
Here are the ten schools most affected by notices. Elementary schools tended to be affected the most because many of the planned layoffs are the result of a decision to increase class sizes in kindergarten through third grades next academic year.
1) King Elementary, where 61.7 percent got notices
2) Avalon, where 56.8 percent got notices
3) Hudson K-8, where 50 percent got them
4) Lafayette Elementary, where 48.7 percent received notices
5) Powell K-8, where nearly 45.4 percent got them
6) Lindsey Academy, 41.3 percent
7) Chavez Elementary, 40.6 percent
8) Washington Middle, 39.7percent
9) Hamilton Middle, 37.9 percent
10) Addams Elementary, 37.6 percent
FYI, there were no notices at Prisk or Naples elementary schools, according to data provided by the LBUSD
