More than 300 firearms were turned in over the weekend drive, including several assault rifles, Sheriff's officials said Monday, proclaiming the two-day effort a success.

Everyone's heard of working for food, but turning in your guns for grub?
It must be a sign of the recession.
It is, however,  a very real deal put together by the city of Hawaiian Gardens and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Lakewood Station.
"Because of the poor economy and the fact that so many people do not have the money to buy food these days, we anticipate that our gun exchange program will be a tremendous success," Hawaiian Gardens Mayor Mike Gomez said in a statement released Wednesday.  "This program gives residents of Hawaiian Gardens the opportunity to participate in their own safety by removing weapons from our streets."
Residents can bring any firearm to surrender anonymously, with no questions asked, in exchange for gift cards to retail stores such as Ralphs supermarkets, Wal-Mart and Target.
Gift cards will be issued based on the number of guns surrendered and the type of weapon.
For instance, each assault weapon will get you $200 worth of gift cards while any other type of firearm will net you $100 per firearm, said Alma Reyes, an administrative analyst for the city of Hawaiian Gardens.
Sheriff's deputies will set up and run the drive-through collection site at the Hawaiian Gardens Public Library and Safety Center, 11940 Carson St., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Guns being turned in must be unloaded and secured in the trunk of a vehicle when the donor arrives at the drop site. If the vehicle has no trunk or cargo area the guns must be kept in the rear of the vehicle away from the drivers', or any other occupants', reach.
