LONG BEACH -- Friends and family of a 35-year-old Long Beach man shot and killed by police in December will rally this Saturday, the two-month anniversary of the fatal shooting.
Community and student organizations, including the ANSWER coalition, friends and family of Douglas Zerby and concerned community members will meet at 1 p.m. at Bixby Park, on the corner of Broadway and Cherry Avenue, said event organizers.
Hundreds of people are expected to attend the rally and then march from the park to police headquarters, located at 400 W. Broadway, to protest the killing of Zerby and demand action and answers, organizers said.
Zerby was shot by police at about 4:40 p.m. on Dec. 12 after a Belmont Shore resident called 911 to report a man with a gun on his neighbor's front porch.
Zerby, who was intoxicated, was sitting on a friend's front stoop and holding a pistol-grip garden hose nozzle.
Police officials said they were calling in back-up units when Zerby pointed the nozzle, which looked like a gun, at officers.
Zerby's family contends officers had ample time to order Zerby to drop the item in the 10 to 15 minutes before officers opened fire.
