LONG BEACH -- Long Beach Firefighters will hold a fund-raiser for cancer research next week in honor of a beloved fire captain who died Friday following a long battle with brain cancer.
The event is in honor of LBFD Capt. Hank Zavaleta, who was diagnosed in 2003 with Glioblastoma Multiforme.
Then 38 years old, the popular firefighter was in the prime of his life with a beautiful wife, two amazing daughters and a successful career in the fire department, friends said.
Though Zavaleta was able to fight the disease and in remission for seven years the cancer returned last year.
His fire department family plans to host the fund-raiser in his honor and to help others in the fight against cancer at Legend's Sports Bar, 5236 E. Second St., in Belmont Shore.
Funds donated at the event, which is scheduled to run from 5 to 9 p.m. April 28, will benefit the UCLA Brain Cancer Research program.
Those who can't attend but who would like to contribute can also mail checks -- made payable to UCLA Brain Cancer Research -- to Long Beach Fire Headquarters, 3205 Lakewood Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90808.
