LONG BEACH -- Police bombarded a downtown Long Beach home with tear gas Friday night in an attempt to flush out a parolee and possible burglary suspect who had barricaded himself inside the residence.
Long Beach Police, including the SWAT team, were deployed en masse to the home, near Seventh Street and Cedar Avenue, at about 3 p.m. after officers tried to detain a potential burglary suspect who ran, said Sgt. Rico Fernandez, a police department spokesman.
The suspect bolted into a home where he did not live, the sergeant said.
Luckily the home owner was not there at the time, police said.
A roughly five hour stand-off ensued, with police breaking out windows on the house and firing multiple tear gas canisters through all the windows, Fernandez said.
At least two rounds of tear gas were tossed into the home but the suspect did not emerge.
Police were preparing to go into the house shortly before 8 p.m. to search for the suspect, who may have fled, police said.
More information is expected to come.
