Diamond gem

Washington third baseman Joakim Sunderquist made possibly the play of the tourney, sprinting 30 feet behind third base and diving to catch a pop fly from Brett Dringman. Sunderquist caught the ball just above the turf for the third out of the second inning.

Montana ahead early

Alaska can make the semis with a win, but it is not looking good for the team from Dimond-West Little League. Montana scored five in the first and leads 5-0 entering the second inning.
Wyoming scored six runs in the sixth inning and then survived a Montana rally to hold on for a 13-11 win Monday morning in the Northwest Regional Tournament.

Wyoming got three home runs from shortstop Daylan McWhorter, who also got a save and had five put outs at short.

It was one of the wildest games of the tournament, with eight home runs and a diving catch leftfielder Drew Burman to stave off Montana's rally in the sixth inning.

Montana got back-to-back home runs from Winston Cox and Logan Laird, including one in the sixth. Montana also got a home run from Brett Dringman.

However, it was the slightly built McWhorter, who stole the show with solo home runs in the second, fourth and then a huge three-run shot in the fifth that hit the souvenir stand in right field.

Wyoming improves to 2-1, while Montana falls to 1-2.

Washington 10, Montana 4: Postgame quotes

| | Comments (0)
Montana manager Mike Follett
on Washington SP Todd:
"Let's face it, he's a great pitcher. He's a great pitcher for his age."

Washington manager Scott Mahlum
on last night's 20-1 win over Alaska:
A game like that, 20-1, what do you get when you win like that? Overconfident. The way we warmed up in the infield and outfield, the way we hit before the game, I knew we were in for a dogfight.

on the 90-100 degree weather in San Bernardino:
We were sweating profusely. It was 60, 62 and raining when we left.  During batting practice, I'd take two kids out at a time for 10 to 12 pitches. It seems to work.

on starting pitcher Jason Todd's velocity:
Upper 70's. He's been clocked at 80, 81 in league, but I don't know.

on Oregon, which Washington faces Wednesday:
In one game (a 25-14 win over Wyoming on Saturday), you really can't get a read off a team. I heard a lot about Oregon, I thought their pitching would be a little better.

Washington pitcher Jason Todd
I tried to keep my pitch count down.

Definitely (we were overconfident). Yesterday wasn't much of a game, but today was definitely a wakeup call.

Logan's run

Montana center fielder Logan Laird has not only hit a double and a three-run home run, but he banged into the fence in center to make a nice catch and rob Zach Haggett of extra bases.

Thanks for the assist

There was a weird  play to end Idaho's five-run second inning as Casey Broderick hit a hard one-hopper that glanced off the glove of Montana pitcher Christian Martinson and went high in the air.

Montana second baseman Derek Reiter grabbed the high carom and stepped on second base for a force. Score it 1-4.

Montana moves ahead with five-spot

Montana surged ahead 8-6 by scoring five runs in the second inning, the big blow being a three-run home run by Logan Laird. Winston Cox followed Laird's home run with another homer.

It is still 8-6 in the top of the fifth.

This one may not wind up 25-14, but Idaho leads Montana 6-3 with two out and two on in the second inning. Jake Foley has driven in five of Idaho's runs with a solo homer and a grand slam.
Billings Boulder Arrowhead Little League swept Great Falls Westside to win the Montana Little League Tournament on Saturday.

Boulder Arrowhead will represent Montana in the Northwest Regional on Aug. 1 in San Bernardino. It's Boulder Arrowhead's first appearance since 2003 in San Bernardino.

Boulder Arrowhead won the first game on Friday 6-1 and then rolled 16-10 over Great Falls Westside on Saturday morning. Read the complete game story here.
Max Cannon is one of those rare people who will do anything for a cause -- in this case Little League baseball. He's giving up two weeks to umpire at the Western Regional and he's coming down from Montana to do it.

The Missoulian, the newspaper of Missoula, Mont., has a great story on Cannon and his trip here to the Western Regional.

Cedar City American is coming for the first time.

Henderson Paseo Verde is making its first appearance.

Oregon

Washington
Mill Creek faced a tough task against Bainbridge Island, and still faces a tough road to San Bernardino against one of five teams still alive. Mill Creek's program is one of the state's best but hasn't been in California in 2002.

Arizona
Pool play wraps up Thursday, with the semifinals on Friday and the championship on Saturday. Arrowhead has been tough in Pool A, but look out for Canyon View and Scottsdale McCormick Ranch. Arrowhead is unbeaten.

Northern California
The tournament opened on Wednesday. Pleasanton had an impressive offensive effort with 18 runs in its win over Foothill. East Turlock American needed eight innings for a 1-0 win over Briarwood-El Camino. The winners bracket features Petaluma Valley and Woodcreek.

Southern California
It's starting to feel like an all Orange County final with Aliso Viejo already in the So Cal final, while Tustin needs a victory to advance.

Hawaii
The title game was played on Wednesday between Kaimuki and Waipio, which reached the West last season. Kaimuki was unbeaten but it had not played Waipio in the tournament.

Alaska, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming
It's uncertain as to which teams are in the state tournaments here but it would not be surprising to see the usual suspects: Missoula Southside (Montana), Dimond West (Alaska), North Boise (Idaho) and Laramie (Wyoming) back in San Bernardino.
