The CIF State Championships are in the books. No individual or team state champions from San Bernardino County or Inland Valley.

Apple Valley's Daniel Rosales had the top place and time from San Bernardino County, second in D2 in 15:16.

The top Inland Valley boy was Rancho Cucamonga's Luis Gutierrez, who ran 15:40 in D1. But Rancho Cucamonga was a very disappointing 13th in the race. Yucaipa recovered to finish 8th after a fall early in the race.

Top county and Inland Valley girl was Valerie Mares of Colony, who ran 18:44 in D2.

Aquinas girls took 14th in D5, but loses only one runner from the team.

The top teams all took fourth: Claremont boys in D2, Granite Hills boys in D3 and Big Bear boys in D4.

Sun is starting to peek out at Woodward Park and it's warming up slightly.

An Update

Race 6: Western Christian takes 8th but are only 13 points out of 5th and 31 out of 3rd. Webb's Andrew Lantz runs a great race, takes 6th.

Big Bear boys weren't expected to repeat as D4 state champions, but runs a very solid 4th place finish.

It didn't rain as hard as I thought it might last night here in Fresno for the CIF State Cross Country Championships, so the Woodward Park course is in good shape. It's not foggy for early races like it was last year, but a little chilly and overcast and it doesn't figure to warm up much.

Early results:

Race 1: Valerie Mares, Colony 39th. 18:44

Race 2: Marrisa Scott, Bonita 42nd 19:00

Race 3: Claremont takes 4th (Paul Ross is 19th). Glendora takes 2nd. Anthony Castellon of Colony is 28th.

Race 4: Daniel Rosales, Apple Valley 2nd 15:16, Dustin Fay, Rim 16th 15:46, Granite Hills team 4th (Cody Jordan 24th).

Quakes attendance numbers have been highly questionable for the last decade or so, but this year, under new ownership, they should become less so.

I interviewed new Quakes president Brent Miles this week (for a story to come out likely next week) and he indicated that they are going to be accurate about attendance, even if it means the Quakes don't win the league attendance title for the first time. They will stick to the formula of tickets sold+comp tickets redeemed=attendance.

My feeling: attendance will go down, but if you go to the games, it probably won't seem like there are any fewer fans there than in previous years. At least the figures will be accurate.
