Defending the Freedom of Scoundrels... and Everyone Else
The Brussel's Journal quotes an Islamic radical who is defending freedom of expression and calling Europeans hypocrites:
Europeans think that freedom of speech is guaranteed in Europe, and that they are defending it against Islamic pressure. This is a view that is widely propagated and defended by groups from across the political spectrum. Reality, however, presents us Muslims living in Europe with another experience. Muslims and others in Europe can not say everything they often want to say and they risk being arrested and prosecuted if they do. Muslims and other religious people can not express their disgust from homosexuality and clearly state that they believe it’s a sickness and a deviation without being persecuted for being homophobic.The Brussel's Journal analysis is well worth reading, and climaxes when it offers this apt quotation of H.L. Mencken:
The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one’s time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.It's long been true that Europeans have enjoyed fewer basic freedoms than Americans. It seems we'll now find out how slippery that slope is.

First, it is hard to read the page, because you have a dark red background and black letters. I think perhaps you should try to have more contrasting colors. But maybe others can see it better than I.
Second, I have just read your first couple of posts and you are saying exactly right thing on this Danish cartoon thing. Honestly, I do not understand why people cannot condemn something they think is wrong, but not violently. Especially, this thing in Europe. This is why I always thought Europe never completely understood what we meant by democracy. They do not understand that the government should not mess with someone for saying something. The restrictive laws in Europe may have lead to Muslims in those countries and in the Middle East not completely understanding the principle that all democracies should adopt.
You can ignore or you can be upset by something that offends you, but either way you shouldn't try to prevent a person from be able to say or take up so much umbrage that they said something. It is when someone takes it to that level it becomes ridiculous and an infringement on that person's freedoms.
