Letters to the Blogger - Gay Adoption
In comments Brian Chadwick writes:
I think gays shouldn't be allowed to adopt to protect the child because kids can be very cruel, and growing up with two dads and two moms just seems kind of weird.I think Brian is correct that the children of gay parents are more likely to experience teasing at school.
But do we really want to enact adoption policies that hinge on how school kids will react to them?
After all, some kids will make fun of mixed race parents, overweight parents, nerdy parents, poor parents, parents who dress sloppily, parents who have bad teeth, orthodox Jewish parents, Muslim parents, parents who drive old, beat up cars, etc.
Should all these people be prevented from adopting?
Additionally, would you rather be raised by gay adoptive parents who your classmates make fun of but who love you very deeply... or by an orphanage or a succession of mediocre foster parents, some of whom couldn't care less about you?
That's the choice faced by many kids. I think the vast majority would choose the loving gay parents, ridicule by schoolyard bullies be damned.

I am a firm believer in equality and against discrimination of any kind. While I do find Brian's comment to be sensible and logical and something that kids with gay parents might go through, I believe that gays should still be able to adopt. Just because they are gay doesn't mean they won't be good parents. The kids would have to go through much more obstacles such as the teasing than the normal kids, but I believe in the end, if they grow up with love and compassion, they will be some of the world's most tolerant and loving people.
Allowing gays to become parents and lead a normal life would be the next step towards more peace and tolerance in the future.

I totally agree with everything echoi said. Furthermore, I feel that if people were to base all their decisions and actions in life soley on how they might think someone would react to it, individuals would loose confidence and essentially the characteristics that make them unique. Of course kids with gay parents will endure more challenges in their life, but we have to hope that in the end they will be better off for having gone through those obstacles.

I was orphaned at age 15 and although I never had to deal with the foster care system, one of the things I have come to appreciate is the good fortune of having not only one but two loving parents. Everyone has issues that they have to deal with in their home life and how ousiders react to those issues. I don't think that is a reason to discriminate against gay couples. In a country where half of all marriages end in divorce, a loving couple seems hard to come by. Even harder to find is a good couple that is willing to take in and raise children. I believe that the most important thing that children learn from their parents is managing basic human relationship swith others. It seems that it would be especially important for young orphaned children to get that experiance. Who cares if the people setting the example are the same sex or different races or whatever circumstance it may be. This is why I still consider myself fortunate, because even though my parents aren't around anymore, for most of my childhood I had a pretty good exampe set for me.

I think that homosexual couples should be able to adopt. Although it would be an obstacle for the family to overcome, as many people will not agree with their lifestyle, in the end the individuals that truly care about them will remain by their side and support their decisions.
Teasing by peers has always been a problem, and children will always find reasons to put down others. It’s inevitable. Kids will scrutinize and demean other children that aren’t like them, no matter what the difference may be. But should the fear of intolerance hold someone back from pursuing an ambition? I say no.
Finally, if someone argues that gay parents should not be able to adopt kids, I do not think that they are necessarily anti-homosexuality, but they are deciding this in the best interest of the potential victim, the naïve child.

I totally agree with you Erin. Either way, adoption by straight or gay parents is far better than life in the foster care system. I know that all parents have to go through a screening process (mine did) and that if someone qualifies, straight, gay, or other, they should be allowed to raise a child. Claming that a child needs role models of both genders is saying that all single mothers should have their children taken away from them because they will not have a father figure. Let deserving people have children they can care about, and let children have parents who will care for them.
