Lying on Resume May Be a Crime in WA

A Seattle newspaper reports:

Talking yourself up to a prospective employer is a time-honored tradition. But come this summer, inflating your resume could be downright illegal.

State legislators are considering a bill that would subject people to a $1,000 fine for claiming in writing to have an academic degree they don't really have or failing to disclose that a listed degree came from an unaccredited institution.

Will this affect Dr. J?

This seems to be fair. If you're going to be honest, then you really have nothing to hide - and if you feel so inclined to lie about it, just save yourself the trouble and find another position.

I don’t think that the price one should have to pay is $1000. I think the person hiring the employee should take the time to check out the person they are hiring and if they are lying, the punishment fits the crime: they aren’t hired.

I totally agree with Ryan. Why would somebody want to put themselves into a position where they cannot succeed. They'll just get fired anyways and save themselves the trouble from getting in trouble for lying. Furthermore, someone should be fined if they lie on a resume. It's almost like identity fraud with a credit card because you are taking using something that you have not earned for your own benefit. If you are caught for fraud like with a credit card, the person should recieve a big punishment. That should be true for something such as not being honest on your resume.
