Heroes Watch: The action is great but the characters are key

Tracy2s.jpgAs I sparked a conversation with friends about what's hot on TV, I heard a few things about every show except one in particular.

ME: "How about that Battlestar Galactica episode last week?"

FRIENDS: "Oh yeah, man. That was crazy! What do you think about all that Cylon $#*%?"

ME: "You catch Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Friday?"

FRIENDS: "Yes I did, that's a very good show, Robert, thank you for asking."

ME: "What do you think about the latest episodes of Heroes?"

FRIENDS: (Cue the flatline tone).

This is the official Heroes Watch SPOILER mention in case you're saving episodes like frakking walnuts and not watching because you had better stuff to do (I admit I am guilty of saving a couple episodes on TIVO). All the fun continues after the jump. (Or image as the case may be.)

If you've caught the last three episodes of Heroes then you know that the show has taken a "Fugitive"-style approach in the second half of the season. SEN. NATHAN PETRELLI (he can fly) has turned on the others and is using his political muscle to get a special operations team led by THE HUNTER to catch, control and imprison anyone with superhuman powers, including his brother PETER.

See last Monday's episode and the other past episodes at the HEROES Web site .

First, let me offer some props to the Heroes producers for pulling out the budget stops. DR. SURESH (super spider? strength) has a car chase sequence while trying to escape the government hunt-squad. SYLAR (serial killer with 1000 powers) has yet ANOTHER torture scene and then a battle in a diner with more special ops hunters. And we got more of CLAIRE (heals from anything) kicking butt, taking names, causing a plane crash and helping out comic store dudes.

HIRO (was a time traveler but is now powerless) and ANDO (was powerless but can now boost other people's powers) are still the comedy relief. The guys break up a wedding just to get a clue they could have got without all the hoopla. But that's their purpose, I guess.

PETER (copies and absorbs powers) has resolved to be a grown up and think through things -- I like that he didn't get caught with his pants down completely when he was double crossed by TRACY (freezes with a touch).  The transformation of PETER'S powers is the other thing -- he has to touch a person who has powers and then he can use them, but only one at a time. I know, the super powers stuff is a little confusing, but I see some much-needed focus in PETER'S actions and motivations vs. what they were in the first half of the season.

While the Feb. 9 episode gave us the indication the series will settle into several near-miss hero hunt-of-the-week storylines, the Feb. 16 episode ending with NOAH'S (Claire's government agent dad) kidnapping by the fugitives PETER and MATT is promising.

This is all too much to cover and I'll end it here for now.  I will tell you that Heroes still gets the season pass on my TIVO for now. And if the producers and show writers keep the focus on the characters and their motivations, maybe folks will start talking about this show again.
