Trailer: Viggo Mortensen in 'The Road'

This is a sure sign of age.  I'm actually looking forward to Oscar-season movies now.  I'm not saying all of the holiday movies are better overall or anything, it's just nice to see a slate of pictures that try to have actual characters and not "types."

So don't expect "The Road," based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Cormac McCarthy, to be "The Road Warrior."  I haven't read it but I hear the book is supposed to paint such a dismal picture of a post-apocalyptic world that you may need a hug and some therapy when you finish it.

The film stars Viggo Mortensen ("Lord of The Rings" trilogy) and Charlize Theron ("Hancock").  Mortensen is the Man (that's all he is) who journeys through a destroyed world struggling to survive while protecting his Boy.

The_Road2.jpgThe early word from the crits is that the movie directed by John Hillcoat with a screenplay by Joe Penhall isn't far off McCarthy's vision.  Early word from a friend of a friend who saw an early screening is that it's only an OK movie.

I will be pushing the Wife to see "Ninja Assassin" or "The Road" this holiday weekend but I will likely end up seeing one or both on my own.
