It's writer Geoff Johns' fault. Him and his multicolored rings. You've probably seen them in your local comic store -- the merchandise off-shoot of DC Comics' successful "Blackest Night" storyline.
Night, the biggest-selling series so far this year, involved the newly-awakened undead of the DC universe in a galactic showdown with every super human left alive and the mighty Green Lantern Corps -- the dudes and dude-ettes famously known for wearing rings that give them superpowers.
They have green rings, the symbol for WILLPOWER, but there are other rings. Yellow for FEAR and black for DEATH are fearsome enough, but WIFE and her good buddy followed me into a comic store and spotted a collection of colors near the cash register.
They were hooked immediately.
Her friend picked up an Indigo ring, for COMPASSION (something she claims to lack) and WIFE chose red for RAGE.
"Why would you choose to be a red lantern? They're sort of evil-ish," I said.
"It looks the coolest," WIFE said, as she put on the ring.
"What about willpower? What about fighting for the Green Lantern Corps?"
She told me she liked the rage ring because "it matched her lipstick."
I cringed for every woman who is actually a comic book fan.
Anyway, WIFE and her friend shrugged, took their rings and went off to spread kindness and destruction.
Now, she wears her ring at different times when we go out and whatnot. I admit it's kind of cool she's wearing something so unrepentantly geeky, but I think I made a mistake in explaining the meaning behind the color of the rings.
After WIFE blasted me with some rage rants while we had lunch, she held her ring up to the light, admired it.
"I'm feeling it, I'm feeling the ring now," she said. "I'm not angry ENOUGH in my mind."
Thanks, Geoff Johns. Thanks a lot.

Wow, your wife went into a comic shop with you! You're a lucky man, so what if she likes the red ring better ;-)
Red Beans!
Ha ha ha!!!
