I can appreciate the do-it-yourself attitude when it comes to films, especially when the filmmakers are circumventing what appears to be studio-mandated remakes, sequels and comic book adaptations.
"Skyline," directed by Colin and Greg Strause and written by Joshua Cordes and Liam O'Donnell, has a stunning, mysterious trailer and if it makes the grade with audiences, the story behind the project will be even more interesting.
There was a piece about the creators over at Hero Complex last month during Comic-Con International.
Apparently, the filmmakers -- who are experienced -- put their money where their mouth is and just did it themselves. And I haven't seen the whole flick. It's just a short trailer above but the special effects look like they're worth some bucks (The Strause Bros. also run their own effects company, Hydraulx).
I believe even more high-quality movies will come in from independent producers and studios will act as distributors and marketers. Perhaps more new filmmakers will take a note from Robert Rodriguez and the makers of "Paranormal Activity" and do it on their own.
Director-producer-actor Bill Duke discussed this last month when I asked him what aspiring creators need to focus on.
"Stop waiting," Duke said. "Just stop waiting. Shift into the new paradigm of self-discovery."
"Skyline" opens Nov. 12.
