TIODNACI
Yesterday, Firstborn came running into the room, screaming, "Spider! Spider!" mimicking his older cousin who has a healthy fear of the little things.
In comes Wonder Boy hot on his heels, bellowing, "Aaahhh!"
Then he stopped, looked at me and said, "Wait. Are we afraid of spiders?"
Children's entertainer Zak Morgan of L.A. told me kids' brains are like brand new hard drives.
"It's uncluttered and fast and fertile," he said. "I love to challenge children without taking away any of their naivete."

My boys like Morgan's latest DVD, "Zakland: The Shiny Surprise," mostly for its anthem, "Tiodnaci," which is, dear reader, I can do it spelled backwards. They hum it around the house. They take it to heart. I'm the kind of parent who's always errs on the side of caution, but I can see how I can take that too far.
Firstborn had to be coaxed into trying the monkey bars, and there was a time Wonder Boy refused to slide down the tallest slide in the playground. That's me echoing in their heads, "Be careful!" When Hubby watches them, they get all sorts of scrapes and bumps. At first I scolded him for not watching them carefully enough, but now I know it's OK for kids to get dirty or fall down and learn.
Mea culpa. The worst case of me in my overbearing-mommy-mode is teaching my oldest his fine motor skills. His kindergarten teacher tells me his aversion to writing just means he hasn't had enough practice with the fine motors like buttoning his shirts or tying his shoelaces, two things that Mama has done for him since time immemorial (and I would still be doing it for him if I didn't know better!)
Tiodnaci.
