'Twilight' mamas
Okay, okay, I've read the books. Seen the movie. (Only once though!) And yes, I'm on board.
My niece Lauren was the one who started reading Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series of books way back in 2005. Shortly after, she couldn't wait for each book to come out and she started saving pictures of this Rob Pattinson dude on the computer with the titles "Beautiful" and "Perfect."
I chalked it up to a great book and a great choice of a leading man. Hey, I remember getting all excited about the Sweet Dreams books when I was Lauren's age. She told me "Twilight" is a vampire love story (and a bit about werewolves too). O-kay.

Then my sister (Lauren's mom) started reading the books to see what the quiet hysteria was about and she LOVED the books.
Just how much? Well, mother and daughter bought every magazine with Rob Pattinson on the cover and of course attended a midnight book release party for the last two books. They woke up at 4 a.m. to go to the KIIS-FM radio station to get an excellent view of Pattinson as he was being interviewed on the air (that's where the photo comes from.) They drove to Hollywood for the "Twilight" premier and waited with legions of other fans for a glimpse of the cast. They've seen the movie five times (and counting). Oh, and don't even get me started on the merchandising. Just ask the folks at Borders and Hot Topic how quickly their Twilight merch is flying off the shelves.
Of course, my sister and her girls are readers to begin with. They dug deep into Hogwarts mythology when the Harry Potter series and then the movies came out. But this Twilight phenom goes beyond people who are big readers to begin with.
People who confess "I don't read," devoured the books (my sister-in-law, who now calls herself "Mrs. Cullen," included!) And moms at my son's school are equally besotted. While I was perusing the Twilight display at Borders, another mom (about 30ish) stood beside me and started up a conversation about it. My mother had the gall to ask if the movie and book was about "Dracula."
Horrors! Lauren, my niece, and the woman said, "No, he's a vampire. There's a difference."
And the mom later confessed she'd read all the books and seen the movie, and even though the character of Edward Cullen is 17, "he's really 109 so he's for all of us."
A-ha! That's why women of all ages are loving everything Twilight, and after reading the books and sitting through the movie (Lauren told me at one screening, girls and women screamed every time Pattinson got screen time!) I understand completely.
The books are an easy read (they're geared for young adults anyway), but the character of Edward Cullen is all the classic literary heroes and movie leading men put together. He says all the romantic things. He's tortured. He's handsome beyond belief. The character of Bella is a bit insipid, but oh well, she's still likeable. And yes, I did feel a bit resentful of my family while I was trying to read the books. "Don't bother Mama now, please, until I finish this book!"
I told my husband he has to read the books so he can learn what to say and what to do. We can always use a little more romance in our lives. He said no thanks, he can't compete with what a novelist comes up with and besides, his delivery will probably just make me laugh.
But that's OK.
We've got Edward.

You are not alone.. I am a 29 year old mother and jumped on the Twilight Bandwagon BEFOR my 12 year old daughter did! And boy was I excited to get the Twilight Calendar and Tote for Christmas... getting ready to purchase my TEAM EDWARD hoodie too...
I love everything that is Edward CUllen...
I am a Cullen Groupie too! I am 33 with kids not old enough to devulge in the series. I read all the books twice in a week before the movie came out and when I am down and in need of some pick me up, I pick up a book of Edward and my moment is complete.
I agree, we all need some Edward! Stephenie Meyer, you are the most beautiful mother of a 108 year old vampire. Thank you for your wonderful talent!
Please. I read all four books and it took me about the same amount of days to complete them. The books were written so a second grader would understand. Perhaps, that is why I don't get it...my reading level must be at the first grade level...darn Ms. Warner...she did not teach me squat!!! I did not find the books all that exciting. I only read all four books because my daughter (who is obessesed with Edward and his filthy eastern ways) asked me to see why they are so popular. Well, there you go...it doesn't take much to please the TV generation. Anywho, I did enjoy the movie and I give credit to Catherine Hardwicke for the movie's sucess.
I read all four books in about four days on the request of my seven year old daughter (who is an Edwardian and digs his filthy eastern ways). I understand that it doesn't take much to entertain the TV generation so I can see why these books are so popular. They are written so a second grader could understand them...perhaps that is why I am missing it. My reading level must be that of a first grader...darn Ms. Warner , she didn't teach me squat. Anywho, I did enjoy the movie. Catherine Hardwicke did a wonderful job with the story and the all the actors did a fantastic job. There is one line all the books that is worth reading..."And so the lion fell in love with the lamb."
