March 2010 Archives

The 2010 Census is here and Montclair is here to help.

The U.S. Census Bureau will provide a Questionnaire Assistance Center and trained bilingual representatives to privately answer questions and help individuals complete their 2010 Census Questionnaires through April 14.

The center will be open from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Montclair Civic Center's Recreation facility, at 5111 Benito St., behind City Hall and the Branch Library.

Angelic Bird, emergency services coordinator and receptionist, attended a California State Training Institute 40-hour training course.

The "Managing Sustained Operations" course was conducted in Rancho Cucamonga last week.

The training covered how to manage the Emergency Operations Center during an extended time period in the event of a disaster.

It also addressed all aspects of cost recovery for the response and recovery associated with a disaster.

Bird has eagerly embraced her new role and responsibilities as the city's new Emergency Services Coordinator.

]A productive DUI saturation operation conducted on St. Patrick's Day by the Crime Suppression Unit resulted in seven arrests, five felonies and 2 DUIs.

The operation was conducted from from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on March 17.

Four officers in two units were on the lookout for DUI drivers at bars and major streets throughout the city.
Preliminary sales tax reports for the 2009 fourth-quarter -- holiday shopping season -- indicate Montclair's sales tax revenues continue to be down, posting a 9.3 percent decrease.

While this estimate is not in the double digits experienced for the previous nine quarters, it represents a continuing and troubling long-term trend for the city's General Fund revenue projections.

Preliminary sales tax estimates are provided by The HdL Companies.

A report on fourth-quarter sales and transactions and use tax performance will be provided to
City Council members after the state Board of Equalization provides its analysis later this month.

The city of Montclair, Montclair-Ontario Junior Women's Club, Montclair Kiwanis Club and Montclair Fire Fighters Association will sponsor a community-wide Easter egg hunt and pancake breakfast.

The egg hunt will be held at 9 a.m. and the pancake breakfast will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on April 3 at Alma Hofman Park (Shark Park), 5111 Benito St., adjacent to the City Hall.

The free Easter egg hunt is open to all children 10 years of age and younger.
Children will be separated into different age categories and, with their own baskets from home, be invited to collect candy filled eggs.

Prizes will be awarded for specially marked eggs. The Easter Bunny will start the egg hunt and then be available for photographs.

Photos will cost $3 per photo or $1 for participants to take a photo with their own camera. Sponsored by MOJWC, all photo proceeds will benefit youth and community programs.

In addition, there will be two drawings for youth activity baskets, sponsored by MFFA. One free drawing ticket will be given to each child age 3 to 10 years old.

The pancake breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, orange juice, coffee and all the fixings for $3 per person.

Sponsored by Montclair Kiwanis Club, all proceeds from the breakfast will benefit youth programs.

MONTCLAIR - Roadway- improvement projects affecting the Costco at 9404 Central Ave. aim to improve access in and out of the retail wholesaler.

"This will make the driveway longer so that it is not interrupting the drive aisles," said Steve Lustro, the city's community-development director.

The first project will widen the main entryway to accommodate three exit lanes. The single entry lane will be maintained.

The "throat" of the entry drive will also be modified, Lustro said. Motorists will have to drive deeper into the lot before making a turn to park.

Once the modifications are finished, cars will be able to make their first right turn after the third aisles and their first left turn after the fifth aisle.

The project also includes moving the southernmost driveway further north.

A break will also be created in the central median to allow northbound cars to turn left into an alternative parking lot.

"When the new driveway and median improvements are completed, it will be a left-in/right-in, but vehicles will only be able to exit the parking lot to southbound Central Avenue," Lustro said.

Two or three trees will be removed from the median to accommodate the changes.

The project is expected to be completed in April.

David Bereit, the national campaign director of 40 Days for Life, brought the message of his pro-life effort to Montclair.

"We are extremely excited that David will have the opportunity to meet with the faithful members of our pro-life community," said Kristina Garza, spokesperson for the local 40 Days for Life campaign in Montclair. "He's an energetic, enthusiastic speaker and we know he will be an inspiration to the people who give their time to come out and pray on Wednesday."

Montclair is one of the many communities across the nation conducting simultaneous 40 Days for Life campaigns from Feb. 17 through March 28

40 Days for Life is a pro-life campaign that focuses on 40 days of prayer and fasting, 40 days of peaceful vigil at abortion facilities, and 40 days of grassroots educational outreach. The 40-day time frame is drawn from examples throughout Biblical history, through which God brought about world-changing transformation in 40-day periods.

Bereit became an outspoken pro-life advocate after Planned Parenthood announced plans to build an abortion clinic in his Texas town in 1998.

The governing boards at two Inland Valley YMCAs have been dissolved and their executive directors laid off.

The changes, prompted by the challenging economic environment, were implemented late last week for the Ontario/Montclair as well as the Rancho Cucamonga & Fontana Valley YMCAs.

"No programs will be affected by this," said Debra Anderson, president and CEO of the West End YMCA, an umbrella organization in charge of four Inland Valley sites.

Operations will not change at the Scheu Family YMCA in Upland and the Chino Valley YMCA.

"We are reducing our overhead," Anderson said. "We expect the transition to be seamless for the people served by these Ys and the employees who serve these communities."
