"This will make the driveway longer so that it is not interrupting the drive aisles," said Steve Lustro, the city's community-development director.
The first project will widen the main entryway to accommodate three exit lanes. The single entry lane will be maintained.
The "throat" of the entry drive will also be modified, Lustro said. Motorists will have to drive deeper into the lot before making a turn to park.
Once the modifications are finished, cars will be able to make their first right turn after the third aisles and their first left turn after the fifth aisle.
The project also includes moving the southernmost driveway further north.
A break will also be created in the central median to allow northbound cars to turn left into an alternative parking lot.
"When the new driveway and median improvements are completed, it will be a left-in/right-in, but vehicles will only be able to exit the parking lot to southbound Central Avenue," Lustro said.
Two or three trees will be removed from the median to accommodate the changes.
The project is expected to be completed in April.
David Bereit, the national campaign director of 40 Days for Life, brought the message of his pro-life effort to Montclair.
"We are extremely excited that David will have the opportunity to meet with the faithful members of our pro-life community," said Kristina Garza, spokesperson for the local 40 Days for Life campaign in Montclair. "He's an energetic, enthusiastic speaker and we know he will be an inspiration to the people who give their time to come out and pray on Wednesday."
Montclair is one of the many communities across the nation conducting simultaneous 40 Days for Life campaigns from Feb. 17 through March 28.
40 Days for Life is a pro-life campaign that focuses on 40 days of prayer and fasting, 40 days of peaceful vigil at abortion facilities, and 40 days of grassroots educational outreach. The 40-day time frame is drawn from examples throughout Biblical history, through which God brought about world-changing transformation in 40-day periods.
Bereit became an outspoken pro-life advocate after Planned Parenthood announced plans to build an abortion clinic in his Texas town in 1998.

The changes, prompted by the challenging economic environment, were implemented late last week for the Ontario/Montclair as well as the Rancho Cucamonga & Fontana Valley YMCAs.
"No programs will be affected by this," said Debra Anderson, president and CEO of the West End YMCA, an umbrella organization in charge of four Inland Valley sites.
Operations will not change at the Scheu Family YMCA in Upland and the Chino Valley YMCA.
"We are reducing our overhead," Anderson said. "We expect the transition to be seamless for the people served by these Ys and the employees who serve these communities."
