Candidates have their own debates, on the side
Anticipation is in the air now that there is less than a week left to the General Elections.
At a recent City Council meeting -- Oct. 18 -- you could really tell that we're in the political season with candidates and non-candidates all taking time to discuss this year's elections and the issues they have with the ways things are being run.
Here are some of the highlights from the council meeting:
  • During council comments, councilman John Dutrey -- who is not up for re-election -- went through a laundry list of issues brought up by candidates at the Oct. 13 candidate forum. Dutrey defended the city and wanted to set the record straight -- he even brought props, a 3-inch binder that holds the city's budget.
  • After the meeting, council candidate Chris Agrella got upset not only because he felt Dutrey was picking on him but also because the cookies that are given out at the council meeting are being given to staff the next day.  "They always buy from Costco, why don't they have Yum-Yum Donut donate or bring in someone's business ... I don't know about you, but that's how nitpicky I'm going to get if I'm elected," he said.
  • Also during council comments, councilman Bill Ruh, whose seat is up, brought up how Target is going to close its gardening area and put in a grocery store, and also brought up Montclair Plaza. Both were hot topics at the candidate forum.
  • Councilman Leonard Paulitz took up his council comments to talk a little politics -- he said, for the first time in his political career "a political party has got themselves involved in a non-partisan election and that is to be regretted ..." He also plugged Proposition 22. Paulitz's seat is up Nov. 2.
  • Both Agrella and council candidate Jose Maldonado were upset because they felt the invocation given by the pastor of Morning Star Christian Church made the City Council members out to be saints. Agrella and Maldonado did admit they have never heard Pastor Larry Brazier give an invocation in the past.
But Maldonado still said, "I'm offended and I'm a Christian."
Brazier said his invocactions are always the same, and his response to the candidates' accusations was "that's cute."

New senior center is now open
Visit the new senior center today.
Take a tour of the 11,000- square-foot facility which is housed in the Civic Center between the Youth and Community Center and City Hall, 5111 Benito St.
The first lunch served in the center will be on Monday -- barbecued chicken sandwich, orange juice, potato salad, cole slaw, bun and fruit cocktail.

Montclair Council candidates
The Montclair Chamber of Commerce and the Community Action Committee hosted a candidate forum earlier this month for those running for City Council.
Montclair residents were able to ask written questions regarding civic-related duties of the candidates.
Council candidates invited to participate in the Oct. 13 forum were incumbents Leonard Paulitz and Bill Ruh, and challengers Chris Agrella and Jose Maldonado.
If you missed the forum you can watch it by going to the city's website, www.ci.montclair.ca.us

City participates in the ShakeOut
City offices participated in the 2010 Great California ShakeOut on Thursday.
At the Civic Center, employees and customers all joined in and took the opportunity to review disaster preparation drills and the essentials for preparing their homes and families in the event of an earthquake.
As part of our ShakeOut participation, City Hall staff were instructed to drop, cover, and hold on to their desk for two minutes.
Then they exited the Civic Center buildings until they were determined to be "safe."
While staff and customers waited for authorization to re-enter, they were reminded to prepare their households with essentials such as water, food, first aid, blankets, sanitation supplies, safety and comfort items, cooking utensils, a change of clothing, matches and candles, tools, maps, and an adjustable wrench for turning off gas lines.

More than 450 attend health fair
The Montclair Community Health Fair held last week was extremely popular with more than 450 attendees.
Representatives from agencies were on hand to answer questions about programs on Oct. 19.
Health screenings included blood pressure, structural screening, hearing, dental, glucose, body mass index, and thyroid and carotid ultrasounds. Flu shots or flu mists were given to 250 people, and 200 people received the Tdap vaccine for whooping cough.
The event had over 150 volunteers, including students from Western University of Health Sciences, the Montclair Senior Citizens Program, and the Montclair Walkers. They assisted with registration, crowd control, immunizations, screening stations, entertainment and door-prize giveaways.
City staff from the Fire and Police Departments also attended with information displays.
