Montclair City Council candidates square off
The Montclair Chamber of Commerce and the Community Action Committee hosted a candidate forum last week for those running for City Council.
Montclair residents were able to ask written questions regarding civic-related duties of the candidates.
Council candidates invited to participate on the Oct. 13 forum were incumbents Leonard Paulitz and Bill Ruh, and challengers Chris Agrella and Jose Maldonado.
If you missed the forum you can watch it on the Government Access Channel 3, today through Sunday and again on Oct. 27 and Nov. 1.
Starting today, residents can also watch the forum or listen to it by visiting the city's website www.ci.montclair.ca.us

Senior Center grand opening Saturday
Montclair Senior Center will finally be open.
Join the city for the grand opening of the new Montclair Senior Center from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the center, near City Hall, 5111 Benito St., Montclair.
The event will include tours of the new facility, displays of senior arts and crafts projects, community information and refreshments.

Art/poster contest entries sought by district
The Chino Basin Water Conservation District is inviting K-12 schools within the district's boundaries to participate in the district's annual poster contest. The theme of the poster contest is "Promoting."
Two awards will be given this year.
For kindergarten through sixth grade and for seven through 12th graders winning entry will receive a check for $250 and their respective art class will receive teacher choice of educational and/or art supplies totaling $1,000.
Artwork needs to relate to the concept of conserving water, promoting the conversation of water, using water wisely.
Entrants are asked to submit artwork relating to the theme on poster paper up to, but no larger than 12- by 18-inches.
On the backside of the artwork students should write their name, school, grade level and teacher.
Entries must be received by 4 p.m. Nov. 23 at 4594 San Bernardino St., Montclair 91763

Halloween Party planned at Community Center
The city of Montclair will be holding its annual Children's Halloween Party on Oct. 31, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Montclair Community Center, 5111 Benito St. (behind the library).
The free event is open to children 12 years and younger who are accompanied by an adult. Activities will include a costume contest, prizes, games, refreshments, and lots of candy. The costume contest will be held at 6:15 p.m. and includes categories for the scariest, most unique, cutest costumes and family (two or more family members dress in a theme).
The event is sponsored by Montclair Human Services Division, Montclair-Ontario Junior Women's Club and Montclair Plaza. For more information call 909-625-9479 or www.cityofmontclair.org.

Landscape maintenance under way in medians
Last week Mariposa Landscapes, Inc. began the process of verticutting or dethatching turf areas in the city's median islands.
Removing thatch from turf allows water to penetrate the soil more efficiently, producing a healthier turf.
While this is being completed, turf in the median islands will appear slightly brown and dry.
The landscape maintenance contractor should complete the work in four to six weeks.

Job fair planned Thursday at old ONT terminal
The County of San Bernardino Workforce Investment board will host the Inland Empire West End Job Fair on Thursday.
The fair "Local Jobs for Local Residents" is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the LA/Ontario International Airport at Terminal Building 1 (old terminal) at 1940 E. Moore Way, Ontario.
Admission and parking are free for all participating employers and job seekers.

Water wise gardening workshops for the home
Chino Basin Water Conservation District will offer a free workshop for residents.
The district will host a Irrigation, Soil & Fertilizers workshop from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 at 4594 San Bernardino, Montclair.
Residents are invited to attend any or all water wise workshops. Handouts, water wise giveaways and snacks included.

H.O.P.E. closet to celebrate first anniversary
The Chaffey Joint Union High School District welcomes the public to dontate to the district's H.O.P.E. closet.
The closet -- which operates out of Valley View High School -- houses articles of clothing, hygiene products, undergarments, school supplies and food for students in the district who are homeless. 
Celebrating its one-year anniversary the closet will host an open house from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at 1801 E. Sixth St., Ontario.
Residents are welcome to see how the facility has grown or just to drop off a donation.
