MONTCLAIR - Another development targeting young professionals and public transit users has been approved for the northern end of this city.
The City Council this week gave the thumbs up to a 129-unit residential development on the northeast corner of Arrow Highway and Monte Vista Avenue.
Developers Hutton Development Co. expect to break ground by early 2012 on the project in the 150-acre North Montclair Downtown Specific Plan.
The project - called Arrow Station - covers 6.94 acres, according to a staff report.
Earlier this year, council members approved a 385-unit residential complex, called The Paseos, at the northeast corner of Monte Vista and Moreno Street.
With the Gold Line expected to reach Montclair by 2016, Councilman Bill Ruh said the two projects send a strong signal to builders that the area is ripe for potential residents and shops.
"We keep on hearing this is a bad economy and that everything is difficult, and while that is true, here are two developers who want to build in Montclair," Ruh said. "These developers must see that we're going to be moving out of this, otherwise, they wouldn't be risking their capital on a project. They can see this is great opportunity to build in Montclair."
The two projects will have easy and direct access to Metrolink as well as the Montclair Transcenter on Richton Street, according to the staff report.
