This week in Montclair
City's Youth Center to receive design award
The city was recently selected as a 2010 California Parks and Recreation Society Award of Excellence recipient in the category of Facility Design-Community Centers/Facilities for the Montclair Youth Center.
The award is for cities with a population of 20,001-50,000.
WLC Architects, the Youth Center's designer, submitted the nomination.
The Youth Center will be highlighted in an awards video to be shown at the 63rd annual California and Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Training Conference in Sacramento in March.
WLC Architect Frank Cuomo and Assistant Director of Human Services Marcia Richter will receive the award on behalf of the city at the recognition banquet.
The Youth Center will also be recognized in the CPRS Conference Program, on the CPRS website and in the CPRS quarterly magazine, which is sent to an estimated 4,000 members representing 525 local parks and recreation agencies throughout California.

Seniors get competitive
Last week 15 seniors participated in the first Nerf Tournament held at the Montclair Senior Center.
The tournament will be held on the courtyard on the first Wednesday of every month; however, last week it was held inside due to the high winds.
Having to balance and aim provides a great workout for the body, face, and eyes.
Competing for the highest score provided lots of laughs, and the seniors are eagerly awaiting the next tournament.
The Senior Center will also host a free Valentine's Day afternoon at the movies at 2 p.m. on Monday at 5111 Benito St.
The movie is "The Wedding Planner," a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey will be shown. Special refreshments will be served.
Reservations are required: 909-625-9483.
Officer judges local science fair
Last week, School Resource Officer Amanda Holloway was one of six volunteer judges at Kingsley Elementary School's Science Fair.
The eager, young scientists in grades 4 through 6 presented their creative ideas, and the judges had to narrow down the winners to just three students, based on the school's criteria.
Officer Holloway was quick to note that all of the students did a great job and worked hard on their projects.
In President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech he said, "We need to teach our kids that it's not just the winner of the Super Bowl who deserves to be celebrated, but the winner of the science fair.
"We need to teach them that success is not a function of fame or PR but of hard work and discipline."
Construction on Vernon Avenue continues
If you've experienced some unexpected detours on Vernon Avenue it's because the county is making some drainage improvements.
The San Bernardino County Department of Public Works started construction on the 20-day project in the Montclair area on Monday.
The work is along 740 feet on the east side of Vernon Avenue just north of Phillips Boulevard.
The drainage improvement project includes installation of sidewalk, removal and repaving of the existing paved shoulder area, addition of curb and gutter, driveway approaches, reconstruction of portions of driveways, repainting of pavement marking and reinstalling of traffic signals.
Contractors will be working from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
There may be slight delays with single-lane traffic flows in both directions during the construction.
Completion of this project will provide improved drainage to the area as well as public safety with the installation of sidewalks.
