Chief Baldwin retires after three decades

After much reflection and consideration, Division Chief Rich Baldwin has decided to retire after nearly 34 years of service to the Fire Department.

His last shift was on Monday.

Baldwin began his career with the city on Aug. 24, 1977, as an apprentice fireman.

He was promoted to fire engineer in 1981, to fire captain in 2006, and on Nov. 9, 2009, he was promoted to fire division chief in charge of operations.

During his career with the city, Baldwin has been actively involved in many aspects of the Fire Department and the fire service:

He has participated in the Code Enforcement Unit's 5-Star Program

he is a long-time member of the Urban Search and Rescue Team, the Fire Apparatus Advisory Specifications Team, and the Training Committee

He participated in the Diversity Committee, which is responsible for developing the Department's Outreach Program

And he is the coordinator for the recruit orientation academies for new firefighters.

Baldwin has also held many positions for the
Montclair Fire Fighters Association including lead negotiator, secretary, and president.

In addition, he has taught at Mt. San Antonio College's Fire Academy for eight years.

Baldwin's vast emergency-scene experience, administrative skills, and departmental historical perspective will be truly missed.

Casual wear welcome for summer time

It's that time of year again when city staffers can finally break out their fancy Hawaiian floral shirts and khakis.

Effective last Monday, Mayor Paul Eaton declared "Casual Summer" for administrative office personnel - this means employees are not required to wear work uniforms and instead wear casual business attire during normal work hours.

Casual business attire is exactly what the name suggests: clothing that is tasteful and appropriate for the business office environment.

Supervisors may suspend the "casual attire" privilege for any employee exercising inappropriate judgment related to casual attire, so play it cool.

Consistent violations of the "Casual Summer" policy may result in termination of the program.

Individual departments may determine the need to continue the practice of wearing business appropriate attire during "Casual Summer."

Department Heads may also allow for a minimum number of city-sponsored event days, or other significant event-related days for pre-approved "relaxed wear" - e.g., logo T-shirts to promote a city-related event or other special activity.

This is effective through Sept. 29.

Seniors get a taste of Mexican flare

The
Montclair Senior Center hosted its monthly Senior in the Spotlight Program last week.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, Senior Center participant Maria Perez led a demonstration on "How to Make Chile Rellenos, Mexican Rice, and Salsa."

The Senior Center was filled with the wonderful aroma of roasted chilies while over 40 seniors enjoyed the demonstration and food sampling while listening to Mariachi music.

Next senior spotlight will be an "Afternoon Musical Interlude" presented by Rufus Fairley from 2 to 3:30 p.m. June 15 at the center, 5111 Benito St.

Family Fun Festival slated for June 4

Mark your calendars for the city's annual Family Fun Festival.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4 at Alma Hofman Park, 5201 Benito St.

This year's event theme is "Bringing
Montclair Together."

There will be carnival rides and games for the kids, a DJ, Tommy's Burgers, BMX demonstrations, skateboarding competitions, food vendors, community organizations, and much more.

Illegal curb painter found

after tip by resident

Police officials found the head of the illegal curb painting ring at Orchard Street and Vernon Avenue after a tip from a resident.

Last week Randy Burwell, the city's accounting specialist business licensing, received calls from an alert
Montclair residents who witnessed illegal curb painting in the neighborhood close to the Civic Center.

Burwell notified police Officer Rob Pipersky.

Pipersky made the identification from a photo he was shown last week that had been snapped by a Public Works Department employee.

Pipersky was not able to make an arrest or issue a citation since he did not actually witness the illegal activity in progress.

He did, however, seize all of the painter's supplies and written records of the addresses of his recent work.

Officer Pipersky will turn the information over to the District Attorney's Office who will decide whether or not to prosecute.

Businesses, individuals honored at luncheon

More 70 people attended the Chairman's Circle Recognition Luncheon sponsored by the
Montclair Chamber of Commerce and presented by Montclair Plaza.

Hosted and catered by the Pomona Valley Mining Company, the event on April 27 provided an opportunity for the
Montclair Chamber to recognize its Chairman's Circle members that had exceeded their responsibilities by significantly supporting events that have established pride and promoted growth in the Montclair community.

Montclair Chamber of Commerce Board Chairwoman Rosa Rangel provided the opening welcome and Chamber President/CEO Darleen Curley served as Master of Ceremonies and presented the awards.

The following members and agencies of the Chairman's Circle were honored: City of
Montclair, Fourth District County Supervisor Gary Ovitt, Montclair Hospital Medical Center, Montclair Plaza, Ben Bridge Jewelers, Burrtec Waste Industries Inc., Cunning Dental Group, Great Metro Auto Group-Honda and Acura, Michael L. Cox and Associates, Monte Vista Water District, Ontario Reign Hockey Club, and State Farm Insurance-Eric Martinez.
