Gold Line Foothill Extension update

Earlier this month city officials hosted the second in a series of Station Planning Workshops related to the proposed Gold Line Foothill Extension from Azusa to
Montclair

The Gold Line Construction Authority is conducting the workshop in "station" communities to comply with the environmental process, provide each community a look at the latest station concept plans, explain how input received during the public meeting phase will be used, and identify ways to improve the plans before "finalizing" them for review in the draft, according to the Montclair  city manager report.

About 40 people attended the
Montclair  workshop last month.

During the meeting, Gold Line representatives indicated some modifications would need to be made at the
Montclair  Transcenter and crossing at Monte Vista Avenue; however, the general layout of the Transcenter and expansiveness of the parking field make the location ideal as the eastern terminus station for the Gold Line, according to the city manager report.

In related news, the Gold Line Construction Authority is making significant progress on the Pasadena to Azusa Phase 2a extension. It is expected the 11.5-mile design-build alignment contract will be awarded this summer, according to the city manager report.

Montclair volunteers recognized

The 30th annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner sponsored by the Human Services Division was held on April 26.

The country fair-styled event, "
Montclair's Volunteers- the Apple of our Eye," was held at the Community Center.

Joining City Manager Ed Starr and the 175 volunteers were Mayor Paul Eaton and council members Carolyn Raft, Leonard Paulitz, John Dutrey, and Bill Ruh.

This event is held every April in conjunction with National Volunteer Month to thank the individuals who donate their time throughout the year to the Human Services Division's many programs - Senior Nutrition, the
Montclair  Walkers Choral Group, the After-School Program, senior activities, youth programs, special events, Por La Vida, and the Medical Clinic.

This year's program featured carnival booths with five different games and stuffed animals as prizes, food booths offering cotton candy, ice cream cones, snow cones, popcorn and nachos; and bubble gum-blowing and pie-eating contests.

There was square dancing and country line dance lessons as entertainment. A special dinner of barbecued beef sandwiches, baked potatoes, beans, and coleslaw was served by Human Services Division staff.

In the past year alone, about 270 volunteers gave over 7,000 hours of their time to Human Services programs.

Two offices recruited to SWAT team

The Police Department recently conducted a recruitment for two tactical positions on the Upland/
Montclair  SWAT Team.

Two candidates competed for the positions and participated in testing which included an oral examination, a firearms proficiency test, and a rigorous physical fitness qualification.

Both candidates - Officer Jerad Burns and Officer Jacob Riedell -- successfully completed all phases of the selection process.

Fire officials participate in safety training

Last week, Fire Prevention personnel received on-line training through Target Safety on "lock out/tag out" procedures.

This class is mandated by Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Training focused on how to shut down and de-energize hazardous electrical equipment for maintenance or as the result of an emergency involving the equipment.

Fire investigators learned the specific procedures to follow for proper shutdown and de-energizing of equipment in order to prevent injuries to employees and emergency personnel. The equipment must then be properly "tagged out" to prevent another person from reactivating the machinery before it can be done safely.

The course also defined the proper start-up and re-energizing of equipment after the repair or maintenance has been completed.

This type of training is imperative for fire investigators who may perform a fire investigation involving electrical equipment.

Officials warn curb unauthorized painters

During the past few months, City Yard staff have noticed illegal curb address painting occurring in neighborhoods from Kingsley Street south to Phillips Boulevard.

In the past, some of the unauthorized painters have been issued citations by police officers for not possessing a city permit or business license to operate in
Montclair

The company, which conveniently has no name, already painted a dozen or so reported wrong addresses that had to be corrected by NPDES/Environmental Inspector Tanya Honeycutt and maintenance worker Edward Molitor.

At this time, there are no organizations authorized by the city to perform this service.

Witnesses to this illegal curb address painting are urged to contact the Police Department while it is occurring at 909-621-4771.

City's trees get trimmed

Last week, the city's tree maintenance services contractor, began trimming trees in Grid Area 1, the area designated for tree trimming in fiscal year 2010-11.

The area is bounded by Kingsley Street to the south, Mills Avenue to the west, Ramona Avenue to the east, to the north city limits.

Public Works staff anticipates all city trees in the city rights-of-way and in city parks within this grid area will be trimmed within four to six weeks, weather permitting.

Questions or concerns should be directed to Public Works Superintendent Xavier Mendez at 909-625-9467.
