Baxter needs a home!

| | Comments (1) |

Got this email about a cute, shaggy dog at East Valley Animal Shelter! Go check it out and see if you'd like to adopt Baxter (or any other pet for that matter).

Hi folks,

Here's Mister Baxter! He's at the East Valley Animal Shelter (contact info is found below) and in need of being "sprung from the joint". This email was forwarded to me by a rescue group that saw him there and discovered that he was an absolutely delightful little guy. I have not personally met Baxter so I know nothing about him other than he is in need of a warm home, lots of TLC and a day at the spa for a shampoo and blow dry. Wouldn't he be adorable greeting your guests at the door on Thanksgiving?!

Thanks for your help in finding Baxter a forever home!

~Connie

Meet Baxter, A0994507 an absolutely deliciously sweet adorable 1 yr old Terrier, Poodle, Schnauzer mix. He is a bit skinny and very matted (clearly neglected) but what ever he has been through in his young life does not seem to have effected his incredible loving personality. He loves people and other dogs (he is Maxie's kennel mate).

Here's information from the shelter:

Adopt-A-Thon captured in photos

SASHA.jpg
I just had to post this photo because this dog bares an uncanny resemblance to my old dog Sasha. And of course I am very partial to Samoyedes because of it. I hope this guy got a home!

Daily News photographer Andy Holzman captured several great moments at this weekend's Pet Adopt-A-Thon, which was held at six Los Angeles pet shelters. Check out more photos here!

What if the owner dies?

| | Comments (2) |

This past weekend I was hit with some terrible news about a very close friend of a friend who died suddenly. The family is currently in the process of dealing with this sudden death. One thing they are facing is what to do with her Rottweiler that she left behind. She was about to put together a Living Will but died right before she was able to meet with her lawyer this week. As soon as I get all the information on this dog I will post some information on him for possible adoption. From what I gather this dog is very sweet and gentle with everyone (including kids). Let's just hope that a relative comes forward and decides to keep the dog. As you know if my friend or I have anything to do with it this dog will not be put in a shelter where he could be euthanized.

In the meantime this got us to thinking (me, my husband, my friend and her husband) about putting together a living will in the event something does happen to any of us. Most often we don't think about such things, especially when it comes to our pets. Even when people put together a will, they tend to think of who the house goes to, how much money goes to what relative and so on and so on. Now if you really care for your pet, chances are you would not forget about him or her but occasionally people do. In this case the friend probably would have put the dog in her will but as you can see she never got the chance to.

So I did a little research and found some websites that may be of help. Here's how to name a pet custodian in a will. Here's a website that will help you create a trust plan for your pet.

Also if you are in this predicament or if you cannot financially take care of your pet or you fall ill the Spca LA will help you. The website also includes resources on other organizations that Help Find Homes For Pets.

These cats need a home

| | Comments (0) |

In the beginning of this blog I talked about highlighting various pets around the valley that are desperately looking for homes. These are pets that the rescue organizations are having a tough time adopting. It's not because they're bad animals, it's just that they've either got strong personalitites, baggage from previous experiences or they might not be the right age. Allot of people like to adopt puppies and kittens. But then again even they too can have baggage based on bad experiences, which causes them to grow up and become adults waiting for homes.

Today the spotlight is on two very cool older cats that really deserve the right kind of home. One is a very quirky and extremely outspoken Snowshoe/Bluepoint Siamese named Lilly and the other is a very docile, sweet cat named Annie.

lilly.jpgLilly:
Breed: Siamese Bluepoint/Snowshoe mix.

What can I say about Lilly. I have had the pleasure of interacting with Lilly a few times since she's sometimes at the Petsmart where I go to clean the Adoption Center cages. She is definitely a character to behold. From the moment you meet her she comes across as very feisty and strong willed. But underneath that tough exterior she's a very loving and sweet cat. She just tends to let you know how she's feeling in a big way. She's nearly been adopted a few times until people realize that she needs to be the only pet without children. "She has a strong personality, but you know what? She's calmed down allot too," said Sandra Harrison of Kitten Rescue. Sandra is her foster care taker. Lilly may be a handful in the personality department but the many volunteers who have gotten to know her know that she'd make a great pet when given the chance.
Lilly's petfinder page can be found here. I also took some photos of Lilly myself. Click here to see them. Some of them came out dark and of course she was not cooperating for the camera. But again! don't let that stop you from adopting her. She'd be a great pet if just given the chance.

Annie.jpgAnnie
Breed: Brown tabby

"Annie to me is an old sensitive soul," said Sandra. "I picture her in a home with someone who's retired because she's just mellow and not crazy or anything." When Sandra found Annie she was already spayed. People had been feeding her for three years but thought she was feral. The truth is she was just terrified on the street and never let anyone touch her because of it. She was either someone's cat that either got out or she was left behind. Once she got in the hands of Kitten Rescue, her loving side appeared like gangbusters. Annie is definitely an example of why older cats should be given the chance. She may not be a kitten but she's very docile and sweet and would be a great pet for anyone willing to give her a chance.

Both Annie and Lilly were found on the street.

I tried to find Annie's profile on petfinder page but I'm not having any luck. If you can find it please let me know and I'll post it here.

For more information about adopting Lilly and Annie (or any other kitten rescue cat) you can email Sandra here.

If you're interested in either Lilly or Annie you might just see them at the Petsmart Adoption Center in Canoga Park located at 21311 Victory Blvd. on the corner of Canoga Avenue and Victory Boulevard.

And you'll definitely see them at the Petsmart cat adoptions, which take place noon to 3:30 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday. But then again you may not if they (hopefully) get adopted.

I plan to keep reminding people of these pets every once in awhile until they get adopted. And of course WHEN they get adopted I'll post a followup.

Not the best quality video but a decent training tool for those of you with super hyper dogs with enough energy to light Las Vegas. If I ever get a border collie or similar dog I'd definitely look into this!

If you've got a dog that loves to catch Frisbees or if you've been wanting know more about giving your lively pooch a fun hobby that redirects his/her energy go visit California Canine Discmasters. By joining you can receive benefits and discounts on training camps and competions for all kinds of dog sports events.

Here's another cool demo. Excuse my lack of camera expertise. I'm not very good at filming fast-moving dogs trying to catch flying objects...LOL!!

Best Friends Adoption Festival statistics...

| | Comments (0) |

I'm happy to say that, according to Heidi Beuch, a spokesperson for Best Friends Animal Society - Los Angeles, approximately 325 animals were adopted out into new homes as a result of the event. It is estimated that approximately 5,000 people attended the event. The event usually attracts between 6,000 and 10,000 people. Heat was definitely a factor. The event normally adopts out about 350 to 450 animals.

But STILL! That's 325 animals that will live out their lives in happy homes and not be euthanized.

bamboo the cat
This is Bamboo, he is a 12-year-old Siamese cat that was given up to the shelter by his owners because he "soiled" everything...whatever that means. I'm happy to know that he was adopted by a nice family. By the end of the day all the L.A. City Shelter cats were adopted or placed. The Lang Foundation agreed to take all cats that weren't adopted. So yeah...no euthanization there!

At this moment there is no information on the shelter dogs that weren't adopted but if Best Friends has anything to do with it, these dogs should somehow be placed rather than be returned to the shelters.

On another happy note, a spokesperson for the West L.A. City shelter said they brought nine senior dogs, six of which were were adopted. She was very happy about this since it can be heart breaking when people bring older pets to the shelter.

Parrots need homes too...

| | Comments (0) |

Salsa the parrot
This is Salsa. He is about seven years old. In his seven years of life he has been in and out of six homes because people don't realize that parrots are difficult to care for.

Parrots First is an avian adoption agency that rescues parrots from owners that can't handle them and shelters that acquire them. "We adopt out parrots and we educate people that are going to adopt on the proper care," said Rose Levine, director of Parrots First. "They can be destructive and time consuming and they can be very loud," said Levine.

Parrots First has been around for about seven years. Since its inception the organization has taken in about 250 birds. "It's growing," said Levine. "The shelters are starting to see them and the need is really growing."

The next event for Parrots First will occur on May 24 at the Pet Orphans of SoCal 1st Annual Pet Care Fair at Woodley Park in Van Nuys. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you're looking into adopting a bird or would like to know more about taking care of birds, the group holds Bird care classes on the third Saturday of every month at the Glendale Humane Society. For more information on directions and times email Rose here.

I laughed my head off at the sight of these two dogs. Christina McClean of North Hollywood put on these fun tees to really draw attention to these two canines. A client of her's works for Blue Cross Pet Hosptial in North Hollywood and she gave them the dogs. At blogging time (heheh...my version of press time) they live at the Bow Wow Bungalow in Burbank. That, of course is unless they got adopted (together). Who wouldn't adopt these two!

It was a hot, balmy day in North Hollywood at the Best Friends Pet Adoption Festival. But of course it was a good day for lots of homeless pets including Chanel, a black German Shepherd. Not only did she get adopted but she has the distinction of being the first adoption of the day. Yudy Machado of Los Angeles didn’t plan on adopting but her friend coaxed her into going since she's been dogless for awhile. The moment she saw Chanel it was love at first sight. “She’s going to be spoiled because I treat my dogs like people,” said Yudy. “She’s lucky! I used to have three dogs but they all died. Somehow I just said to myself that I’m getting this dog.” Looks like you'll have an awesome life Chanel. Congrats on your new home Chanel!DSCN4799.JPG
